About the Role
We are looking for a motivated and experienced individual, with a track record of designing and developing data science workflows to join the Exploration Data Systems and Capability team. This role sits within the Exploration Excellence and Innovation group, and reports to the Manager Data Systems and Capability. The role is ideally based in Toronto, however other BHP office locations will be considered for the right candidate.
The Principal - Data Science is accountable for the world class application of data analytics in all aspects of Mineral Exploration activity. This role is both a support to and governance of all data science application both within the Data team and external to it.
Accountabilities
- Provide oversight for data analytical (e.g. machine learning) application within Minerals Explorations.
- Maintain a five-year strategic road map for the continual development and implementation of data analytics in mineral exploration.
- Maintain currency of new practices and methodologies in data analytics – particularly in areas of relevance to exploration e.g. spatial data applications and ensure regular communication of these to MEX.
- Manage third party relationships, either technically, administratively or both, where data analysis is a major component of the service provided.
- Direct contribution on the geophysical and geological aspects to mineral systems framework design (feature generation) and provide advice on aspects of individual model design and utilization of outputs.
- Maintain visibility of the universe of global service providers, including potential partners from industries outside of the geoscience application.
- Championing and raising awareness with the body of geoscientists within the MEX group on the theory and application of AI methodologies commonly applied in the geosciences.
About You
Requirements
- Degree in Computer Science, Statistics or Mathematics or any data science related field from a reputable university.
- At least 15 years’ experience, in the development of data analytical solutions particularly (but not necessary exclusively) for spatial and geoscience applications.
- Experience with the geoscience application of ML.
