At BHP we support our people to grow, learn, develop their skills and reach their potential. With a global portfolio of operations, we offer a diverse and inclusive environment with extraordinary career opportunities. Our strategy is to focus on creating a safe work environment where our employees feel strongly connected to our values and objectives, and where the capability of our people is key to our success.

Come and be a part of this success.

About the Role

The Principal Energy is an essential member of the Energy Team within BHP’s Commercial Function. Our purpose is to deliver safe, reliable and competitive energy to our business and enable BHP’s climate strategy through the transition to low-emissions energy.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping BHP’s energy future by leading the day-to-day management of our existing Power Agreements at Port Hedland, owning and driving the Port Hedland power strategy, and bringing that strategy to life through disciplined execution. A key part of this role is originating and delivering Power Purchase Agreements that balance BHP’s medium and long-term objectives and directly support our commitment to reduce operational greenhouse gas emissions by at least 30% by FY2030 (from FY2020 levels). You will also have the flexibility and capability to interchange with teammates to manage BHP’s East Coast Assets Power Books, ensuring seamless support across the broader energy portfolio.

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Strategy & portfolio delivery: Develop and implement regional and national commercial strategies for power and renewable certificate origination and contracting, aligned with Asset requirements.
  • Origination to execution: Lead end to end origination of renewable energy arrangements—market engagement, commercial structuring, internal approvals and execution—in collaboration with BHP Functional teams to deliver portfolio level outcomes.
  • Book management: Manage and optimise the Power Book and associated sourcing and contracting strategies in line with Company policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.
  • Energy transition leadership: As an expert, lead workstreams that support net zero operational GHG emissions by 2050 and assess energy transition options for Assets.
  • Regulatory and certificates: Manage regulatory obligations for electricity and environmental certificates.
  • Stakeholders & market intelligence: Build high quality internal and external relationships; monitor electricity and certificate markets—including provider capabilities, NEM and NWIS reforms, regulatory changes and technology developments—and translate insights into actionable recommendations.

About You

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Ability to develop power strategies (Port Hedland/NWIS and NEM) and translate them into an executable market engagement plan or book actions.
  • Deep experience executing renewable PPAs (including firming and risk allocation) and managing delivery post-execution.
  • Advanced commercial T&Cs literacy; proven ability to resolve issues collaboratively with Legal, Tax, Finance and Technical.
  • Strong knowledge of Australian electricity markets and regulation, including NEM and NWIS.
  • Portfolio/Power Books management experience across multiple assets (optimisation, positions, settlements).
  • Certification expertise (e.g., LGC strategy, compliance treatment, retirement and Scope 2 reporting).
  • Analytical, data-driven decision maker with market modelling/scenario skills and sound judgement under uncertainty.
  • Influential collaborator with strong stakeholder engagement and executiveready communication and presentation skills.
