About the Role

We are seeking a motivated and highly experienced Cost Estimating & Control Subject Matter Expert (SME) to bring specialised knowledge and support project teams in delivering successful and value-accretive projects. 
This role involves updating and supporting BHP’s approach cost estimating and controls, and developing the necessary frameworks, strategies, and processes to ensure the business meets these standards. The Cost Estimating and Control SME will be responsible for disseminating this approach across various regions, establishing support and governance structures as needed.
Additionally, this role is crucial in fostering a culture of care within global and regional project teams. Key responsibilities include empowering employees with the skills and capabilities required to meet the defined service offerings, equipping leaders with the tools to manage their teams effectively and facilitating cross-regional engagement.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Acts as the go-to expert for Cost Estimating & Control methodologies and technical decisions across globe.
  • Shapes the vision and strategy for Cost Estimating and Controls within Global Projects, aligning with broader business objectives, and regional requirements.
  • Defines and supports best practices, processes, tools, standards, and templates for effective Cost Estimating & Control.
  • Nurtures a culture of care, setting behavioural expectations and developing tailored strategies to support BHP’s core values.
  • Maintains a wide network of relationships to drive functional and asset integration across BHP.
  • Makes evidence-based strategic decisions aligned with long-term business objectives.

About You

  • Years of experience in SME Projects within the mining or projects industry, demonstrating strong industry knowledge and a network of subject matter experts. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in business (Finance or Accounting), Engineering, Quantity Surveying or related discipline.
  • Identifies, implements and evaluates the success of continuous improvement activities/initiatives to improve the safety, effectiveness and efficiency of BHP systems and processes.  
  • Subject Matter expert in Cost Estimating & Control
  • Demonstrated experience in managing estimates and cost control for large scale industrial/mining projects.
  • Experience in project reviews
  • Effective and highly influential diverse stakeholder engagement including an ability to constructively challenge ideas and build trusted relationships
  • Exceptional communication and the ability to engage across a multitude of levels
  • Effective problem solver and influencer, able to clearly communicate business benefits, risks, and project dependencies.
  • A sound understanding of key business and mining industry performance driver
  • Strategic and analytical thinker that demonstrates business acumen, with the ability to focus and prioritise critical deliverables to provide timely insights to stakeholders
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building abilities
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills in English and Spanish
