About the Role

 
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Estimating & Cost Control Subject Matter Expert (SME) to bring deep technical expertise and guide project teams in delivering value-accretive outcomes.
In this role, you will refresh and sustain BHP’s global approach to estimating and cost control, designing frameworks, strategies and processes that ensure consistent excellence across the business.
You will be responsible for sharing this approach across regions, establishing governance structures, and ensuring teams have the right support. A key part of the role is fostering a culture of care within global and regional project teams—empowering people, equipping leaders, and enabling strong cross-regional collaboration.
This is an opportunity to influence the direction of Estimating & Cost Control globally, providing strategic guidance that strengthens business performance and helps deliver safe, efficient and high‑quality projects.
 
 
Main Responsibilities
 
  • Act as the global subject matter expert for Estimating & Cost Control methodologies and key technical decisions.
  • Shape the long-term vision and strategy for Estimating & Cost Control within Global Projects, aligning with business objectives and regional needs.
  • Define and support best practices, processes, tools, standards and templates that enable effective cost estimation and control.
  • Foster a culture of care by setting behavioural expectations and developing strategies aligned with BHP’s core values.
  • Build and maintain strong networks across BHP to integrate functional and asset perspectives.
  • Make evidence-based strategic decisions that support long-term value creation.
 
 

About You

 

  • 15+ years of progressive experience in projects within the mining, natural resources or related project industries, including at least 8 years in leadership roles.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business (Finance or Accounting), Quantity Surveying or related fields.
  • Strong affinity for numbers, with exceptional analytical and data-driven decision‑making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, implement and evaluate continuous improvement initiatives that enhance safety, effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Experience participating in or supporting project reviews.
  • Proven capability to engage and influence diverse stakeholders, constructively challenge ideas and build trusted relationships.
  • Exceptional communication skills, able to engage across multiple levels of the organisation.
  • Strong problem-solving and influencing abilities, with clarity in communicating business benefits, risks and dependencies.
  • Solid understanding of key business and mining industry performance drivers.
  • Strategic, analytical and business‑savvy mindset with strong prioritisation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship‑building abilities.
  • High‑level verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish.
