Work Location
This role is flexible to be office based in the BHP Exploration Head Office in Toronto, Canada. However, other global Exploration office locations will be considered.
BHP offers relocation assistance to support the successful incumbent in transitioning, if required. Benefits offered as part of the relocation program include (but are not limited to) new home purchase assistance, temporary accommodations, home finding trip and a resettlement allowance.
Purpose
The Principal Generative Geoscientist will undertake 4D integrated geoscience workflows to enable and support the selection and prioritization of new Porphyry and Basin-hosted Copper system Concepts at a global- to regional belt-scale, delivering high‑quality exploration options to BHP’s Exploration teams. The role is accountable for rigorous data integration, analysis, and interpretation to inform strategic business decisions, grounded in a strong Mineral Systems approach. In addition, the position provides technical guidance in 4D geoscience and supports the development and maintenance of a robust and healthy exploration portfolio.
This is a senior global technical position that reports directly to the Manager Global Generative Concepts and is part of a team of five geoscientists based in North America. The role also collaborates extensively with stakeholders based in BHP office locations globally.
About the Role
In this role, you will:
- Serve as a core member of a highly specialized team of experts responsible for identifying, assessing, and recommending new porphyry and basin-hosted copper system concepts globally.
- Contribute to the long‑term Exploration Strategy (2–5 years) by helping build and maintain a high‑quality, healthy portfolio of porphyry and basin‑hosted copper projects across the BHP Exploration pipeline.
- Apply 3D temporally dynamic (4D) exploration methodologies to construct geological evolutionary models of mineral systems at global to regional belt scales.
- Apply rigorous Mineral Systems thinking to the compilation and integration of multi-disciplinary geoscientific datasets and design of critical work programs.
- Provide 4D structural architecture interpretations at global to regional belt scales to inform prospectivity assessments, support efficient area reduction, and predict favorable environments for large‑scale, high‑quality porphyry and basin‑hosted copper systems.
- Further the discipline of 4D integrated geoscience by representing Generative interests across key internal programs and academic partnerships.
- Foster a professional, dynamic, and safe working environment, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements and industry‑standard practices.
- Work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders and teams across global BHP locations.
- Participate in global technical reviews and portfolio prioritization exercises, providing deep expertise in 4D integrated geoscience.
- Provide advanced 4D integrated geoscience skills, experience, and technical leadership to support Generative projects and activities.
- Coach and develop 4D integrated geoscience capabilities across Generative by sharing technical skills, experience, and best practices.
About You
As the successful candidate you will have:
- Undergraduate degree in Geoscience, with Post-graduate studies (Master’s or PhD) in large-scale structural, geophysics and/or 4D integrated geosciences highly desirable.
- Technical expertise in developing and applying integrated exploration methodologies at global and/or regional belt scales, combining 3D geospatial data with the dimension of time (4D).
- 10+ years of relevant professional geoscience experience, with strong understanding of generative exploration workflows for copper; equivalent experience in other commodities, supported by advanced structural geology capability, will also be considered.
- Proven expertise in applying and integrating large-scale geophysical datasets within 4D geoscience workflows.
- Strong global systems knowledge, with demonstrated experience applying and integrating global plate model spatial–temporal frameworks and/or associated statistical analyses within geoscience workflows.
- Demonstrated deep proficiency in the application of mineral‑systems thinking, including a sound understanding of the critical processes controlling the formation of at least one copper system subtype (e.g., porphyry or basin‑hosted).
- Professional working proficiency in English is mandatory; additional language skills will be considered an asset.
Application Deadline
This posting will be active until 11:59pm CST on February 15, 2026.
