Work Location
This position will be based in the BHP Exploration Head Office in Toronto, Canada. However, other Exploration office locations including Santiago, Chile and Perth, Australia will be considered.

Purpose
The role of Principal Generative Geoscientist will be responsible for identifying and advancing the exploration of New Concepts for porphyry copper deposits, with the objective of reducing the search space and delivering high-quality exploration options to the Discovery team. The role ensures high-quality data capture, analysis, and interpretation to support informed business decisions, with strong Mineral Systems foundation. It also contributes to project evaluation, provides technical guidance, and supports the development and maintenance of a robust and healthy portfolio.
By promoting technical rigor and high standards of work, the Principal Generative Geoscientist collaborates with stakeholders from the Discovery, Commercial and Operations teams to ensure alignment with overall plans and successful delivery of critical work programs.
This is a senior technical global position and reports directly to the Manager Generative Porphyry Copper Global and will be part of a team of eleven geoscientists based in multiple locations across the globe.
About the Role
- Act as a core member of a highly specialized team of experts responsible for identifying, assessing, and recommending new exploration opportunities for Porphyry Copper deposits globally.
- To deliver on the long-term Exploration Strategy (2-5 years), contributing to building and maintaining a high-quality and healthy portfolio of porphyry projects for the global exploration pipeline.
- With deep understanding of key geological terranes for porphyry mineral systems, accountable to recommend, generate and progress new exploration concepts from large-scale reconnaissance to high-quality porphyry prospects within a 1–2-year time frame.
- To apply Mineral Systems thinking to design critical work programs for the assessment of prospectivity, efficient area reduction, and prediction of favorable areas for the formation of large-scale, high-quality porphyry systems.
- Accountable for carrying out high-quality data capture, analysis, and interpretation leading to ground capture to continually replenish the global project pipeline.
- Promote a professional, vigorous, and safe working environment to ensure adherence to all regulatory and industry-standard working practices.
- To collaborate and work closely with multiple stakeholders and teams across the globe.
- Contribute to the identification, evaluation and capture of opportunities inside approved focus areas.
- Produce working geological models at regional and camp scale for exploration concept and reconnaissance through integration of multiple datasets (geological, geochemical and geophysical) and rigorous application of the Mineral System framework.
- Lead and/or participate in global technical reviews based on deep knowledge of porphyry copper systems.
- Provide expert and specialist geological skills, experience and capability to support Exploration projects and activities.
- Mentor and develop exploration teams through sharing geological skills, experience and capabilities.
About You
As the successful candidate you will have:
- University Degree majoring in Geology. Post-graduate degrees in structural, geochemistry or economic geology will be highly regarded (master’s or PhD)
- Extensive professional experience in geosciences (+15y) and solid understanding of generative workflows as applied to porphyry copper exploration with a demonstrable track record of success.
- Field experience, regional geological mapping, combined with ability to integrate multiple datasets at different scales to build defendable geological models and interpretations
- Sound understanding and field experience in identifying critical processes necessary to form a porphyry copper mineral system at multiple scales.
- Project evaluation experience will be highly regarded.
- Professional working proficiency in English. Second language skills would be considered an asset.
