About the role
The role of Principal Geoscientist will be core member of the Chile Discovery team, responsible for identifying, executing, and advancing the exploration of porphyry copper projects. The role ensures high-quality data capture, analysis, and interpretation to support informed business decisions. It also contributes to project evaluation, provides technical guidance, and supports the development and maintenance of a robust and healthy portfolio. By promoting technical rigor and high standards of work, the Principal Geoscientist collaborates with stakeholders to ensure alignment with overall plans and successful delivery of objectives.
Main Responsibilities:
- Selects target areas and appropriate methodologies for sampling and data collection to build ore body knowledge that enables value-driven decisions for BHP.
- Leads the assessment of third-party exploration opportunities, setting strategic priorities and driving the selection of projects with the highest technical and commercial potential.
- Designs and executes non-invasive data collection methodologies and interpretations to provide data-driven geophysical guidance for the organization.
- Performs geological modelling based on integrated datasets to analyse and interpret target areas, generating valuable orebody knowledge.
- Identifies, engages and manages a range of diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- Applies a scientific methodology to investigate various hypotheses or questions and draw inferences on possible solutions.
- Plans and oversees project delivery, ensuring value generation and achievement of defined outcomes.
About You
Requirements:
- Degree in Geology or related science from a reputable university.
- 10+ years of experience in geosciences (including in specialist field), and solid understanding of exploration workflow as applied to base metal exploration with a demonstrable track record of success.
- Proficiency in common industry software for geoscientific data (ArcGIS Pro, Leapfrog, Oasis Montaj, etc).
- Post-graduate studies highly regarded.
- Spanish and English fluency (Recommended).
- Demonstrates a strong commitment to safety, social value, and sustainability in all aspects of work.
- Demonstrates strong teamwork skills, fostering collaboration and motivating high-quality deliverables, with proven exposure to exploration success and discovery
- Sound understanding of porphyry copper deposits, geological features and mineral system frameworks, with particular application to successful discovery techniques.
- Deep technical understanding and a strategic view of how to accomplish results through influencing to accomplish successful performance of the role.
