Purpose
Reporting to the Manager Metals Global Endowment, the Principal Geoscientist will work closely with geoscientists and data scientists within Exploration to maintain, enhance, and embed our AI-powered Metals Global Endowment (MGE) as the foundation for evaluating exploration opportunities. The Principal will also support Exploration’s ambition to drive transformational growth by creating options that are competitive in BHP’s global portfolio through the discovery of new opportunities.
Work Location
This is a full-time position based in BHP’s Toronto, Canada office. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home in line with company policy) is standard for BHP.
About the Role
In this role you will:
- Collaborate with Data Scientists to deliver model improvements and workflow enhancements as per sprint plans and engage with relevant stakeholders to solicit feedback on model / workflow improvements and customer experience.
- Identify and test innovative solutions such as AI and machine learning to model geologic processes and predict resource distribution (e.g. data type / source, data processing, feature / label construction, feature engineering, and resource modelling).
- Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to adapt / develop MGE workflows at concept and play scale, including data-driven concept definition and resource assessment.
- Advance our understanding of the geologic processes that form mineral deposits by providing objective data-driven insights into BHP’s Mineral Systems Frameworks based on MGE modelling results.
- Support manager in delivering MGE strategy and planning sprints.
- Support Data and Systems Engineers to enhance primary customer visualization and interaction with MGE data, model, and products, and intelligently apply automation across MGE workstreams.
About You
- Bachelor’s degree in Geoscience with extended years of post-qualification experience in resource exploration geoscience or related fields. Post-graduate degree in Geoscience or related field preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise in mineral system concepts and analysis, with in-depth knowledge of one or more mineral systems and at least two mineral system processes across multiple regions.
- Demonstrated experience in global to play scale resource / prospectivity evaluation. Experience in probabilistic resource assessment and in-depth knowledge of risk and uncertainty preferred.
- Proficiency in selecting, preparing, analyzing, modeling, and interpreting various types of geologic data. Experience in working with large-scale datasets preferred.
- Proven experience in effectively communicating the results of geologic evaluations and models, including data-driven insights, risks, and uncertainties to drive informed decisions.
- Capability and willingness to learn the fundamentals of data science, including machine learning and AI, and application of emerging technologies. Experience / proficiency in programming (python preferred), machine learning, and AI preferred.
- Advanced proficiency in ArcGIS Pro, Microsoft Excel, Word, and Power Point.
