Mount Arthur Coal is an open-cut coal mine 100 per cent owned by BHP. Located in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales it's the largest producer of energy coal in the region, operating alongside olive growers, wine makers, horse breeders and the nearby residential community of Muswellbrook.

About the Role



We are currently seeking an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to join our Technical Services Team, which has an exceptional culture where success is celebrated, and work/life balance is valued.


Reporting to the Resource Superintendent, you will play an integral role in our mine planning processes, provide operational support to a large, complex, open-cut truck and shovel operation and support closure planning activities.

The role on offer is Monday- Friday residential position 


You will be responsible for the following:


•    Accountable for geotechnical processes, procedures and outcomes as defined in Principal Hazard Management Plans, site planning and operational systems.
•    Provide geotechnical advice in relation to mine plans, slope stability, hazard management and provide geotechnical support to operations, short to medium term planning and closure planning teams
•    Maintain and improve the site's Fall of Ground Management System.
•    Conduct investigations into geotechnical concerns to identify areas of risk and, where required, develop management plans with recommendations to mitigate risk.
•    Develop recommendations for the management of hazards within the operational areas in accordance with site procedures and geotechnical process, ensuring effective engagement with key stakeholders.
•    Maintain records and report information relevant to geotechnical hazards.
•    Communicate with personnel, contractors & key stakeholders to share safety information and risk management activities pertaining to geotechnical hazard management.
•    Comply with regulations, policies, standards and procedures.
•    Provide geotechnical input and direction to exploration planning as required.
•    Maintaining the geotechnical monitoring system and reporting.

About You



The ideal candidate will have experience in open cut coal including truck and shovel, and drill and blast with exposure to hydrogeology and soil mechanics issues. You will have the ability to work autonomously and pride yourself on analytical, written and verbal communication skills to work effectively within an integrated engineering and operations team.


It is essential that you possess a strong understanding of technical risk and can demonstrate safe behaviour within an operational environment. Due to the nature of this role your people and communication skills are of the upmost importance as well as your relationship skills when liaising, negotiating and influencing a range of internal and external stakeholders.


Working knowledge of Vulcan would be beneficial, complemented by confidence in geotechnical software packages such as the standard RocScience suite and geotechnical monitoring equipment (IBIS radars, GNSS, piezometers).

You must possess the relevant tertiary qualifications. Acquired RPEQ / CP status will be highly regarded.
