About the Role
We are currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced Principal – Health, Safety Security (HSS) to join our Minerals Australia Projects HSS team, supporting the WA Major Projects Port Program. Reporting to the Health, Safety, and Security (HSS) Superintendent, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and supporting the safe and successful delivery of the Port Program of projects. This position requires strategic thinking that translates into effective influencing of contracting partners, driving the delivery of HSS performance and successful delivery of a range of projects under an EPCM contracting model.
The role demands adaptability and flexibility to support the growth and success of the Project and HSS team. WA Major projects deliver projects that cost $250M+ and are aligned with BHP’s growth and sustainability objectives.
This permanent FIFO-based role is based in Port Hedland. The fly-in, fly-out roster would be 5 days on, 2 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off.
In this role, you will:
Provide subject matter expertise (SME) in HSS across a range of projects delivered through an EPCM model.
- Support project execution from planning and contractor mobilisation through to delivery, leveraging your deep experience in mining and project environments.
- Offer strategic HSS leadership and coaching to project teams, contracting partners, and functional stakeholders including project controls, commissioning, and operational readiness.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of HSS standards, procedures, and systems in alignment with the Minerals Australia Projects Framework and internal standards.
- Champion field leadership and foster a strong safety culture by providing technical guidance and coaching on compliance and safety leadership practices.
- Guide EPCM management on the effectiveness of HSS risk assessments, incident investigations, and corrective actions.
- Manage HSS systems and data quality for Iron Ore projects, including analytics, benchmarking, and the development of key performance metrics and insights.
- Enable EPCM contractor through influencing and engagement.
- Monitor HSS performance through executing Governance and Assurance activities.
About You
As the successful applicant you will be able to demonstrate the following:
Demonstrated relevant professional experience in mining and project, similar Health, Safety, Security and Health Science roles.
- A tertiary qualification in Health, Safety, Science, or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience in HSS management, particularly in managing large and complex projects.
- Proven ability to lead by example and coach others in safety leadership.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence diverse teams and manage human factors effectively.
- Skilled in stakeholder engagement and confident in making informed decisions.
- In-depth knowledge of Western Australian Work Health and Safety Legislation.
- Confidence in leading change through vision, empowerment, and effective execution of change management processes.
- A proven track record of delivering team outcomes and meeting deadlines reliably.
- Strong capability in contractor engagement and performance management, including the ability to critically assess and challenge HSE performance.
