About the Role
Copper Major Projects delivers a portfolio of large capital projects underpinning future growth in the South Australia province.The growth portfolio doubles copper production in South Australia over two major phases, targeting 500 ktpa Cu capacity in FY31 and 650 ktpa in FY34. To achieve this, BHP will deploy significant capital over the coming ten years. Ensuring we invest wisely to improve capital productivity is the main focus of the Copper Major Projects team. This means designing minimum viable solutions, leveraging efficient delivery and partnering models, and actively learning from world-class projects to improve the way we work. The end-state of this transformative work is a globally significant asset comprising the Olympic Dam, Carrapateena, Prominent Hill, and Oak Dam deposits together with large-scale concentration, smelting, and refining facilities.
We are currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced Principal – Health, Safety & Security (HSS) to join our Minerals Australia Projects HSS team, supporting the CuSA Major Projects Portfolio.
Reporting to the Health, Safety, and Security (HSS) Manager, you will play a pivotal role in supporting team members across multiple Major Projects in South Australia. The role is a permanent opportunity, providing leadership, direction and technical support to key CuSA Major Projects and key stakeholders on all HSS matters.
This high-profile position requires strategic thinking that translates into effective construction and operational practices, driving the delivery of HSS technical and strategic improvements. The role demands adaptability and flexibility to support the growth and success of the Project and HSS teams.
Please note this position is site-based, travel will be required throughout project execution or subject to business need.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the development and execution of strategic HSS programs, including Project delivery models, standardised HSS deliverables, and governance frameworks.
- Give HSS input to the design and establishment of HSS standards, procedures and systems for CuSA Major Projects within the Minerals Australia Projects Framework and Internal Standard.
- Provide technical and strategic support to build a strong safety leadership culture and enhanced understanding of compliance relevant to company and legal requirements.
- Coach line management on the quality and effectiveness of HSS risk assessments, Field Leadership activities, event investigations and corrective actions to support an improvement in managing our risk profile.
- Engage with stakeholders to enable HSS service delivery and project delivery under various operating and contract models.
- Review project design specification to ensure HSS risks and controls are identified and captured with Project design.
- Manage HSS Systems and data quality related to Copper Coal Asset Projects including the undertaking HSS analytics including benchmarking, developing key performance metrics and continuous improvement plans.
- Support leadership in building an understanding of, and compliance with, relevant Global Standards and legal requirements.
- Support legislative compliance for Safety Execution service provision.
- Design and deliver relevant HSS content for upskilling of project teams and contractor personnel.
- Facilitate communication between workgroups to ensure consistency in systems, processes, procedures and goals.
- Manage, control, monitor and participate in the execution of work that is the accountability of the HSS function.
About You
As the successful applicant you will be able to demonstrate the following:
- Tertiary qualification in Health, Safety, Security, Risk Management, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience in HSS management, particularly in managing large and complex projects.
- High degree of strategic, business, and risk management acumen.
- Proven ability to lead by example and coach others in safety leadership.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence diverse teams and manage human factors effectively.
- Skilled in stakeholder engagement, building relationship and confident in making informed decisions.
- In-depth knowledge of South Australian Work Health and Safety Legislation.
