About the Role

 

We are currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced Principal – Health, Safety Security (HSS) to join our Minerals Australia Projects HSS team, supporting the WA Asset Projects Delivery Portfolio.

This permanent Perth-based role offers a dynamic mix of office and site engagement in Pilbara, with regular travel (approximately three days per week) to project locations. The fly-in, fly-out roster would be 5 days on, 2 days off, 4 days on, 3 days off.

You will play a pivotal role in shaping and supporting the safe and successful delivery of a diverse portfolio of projects ranging from $20M to $250M, aligned with BHP’s growth, sustainability, closure, and social value objectives.

 

In this role, you will:

  • Provide subject matter expertise (SME) in HSS across a range of projects delivered through various models including EPC/EPCM, owner-managed, and integrated project teams.
  • Support project execution from planning, tendering, and contractor mobilisation through to delivery, leveraging your deep experience in mining and project environments.
  • Offer strategic HSS leadership and coaching to project teams, contracting partners, and functional stakeholders including project controls, commissioning, and operational readiness.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of HSS standards, procedures, and systems in alignment with the Minerals Australia Projects Framework and internal standards.
  • Champion field leadership and foster a strong safety culture by providing technical guidance and coaching on compliance and safety leadership practices.
  • Guideline management on the effectiveness of HSS risk assessments, incident investigations, and corrective actions.
  • Manage HSE systems and data quality for Iron Ore projects, including analytics, benchmarking, and the development of key performance metrics and insights.

About You

 

As the successful applicant you will be able to demonstrate the following:

 

  • Demonstrated relevant professional experience in mining and project, similar Health, Safety, Security and Health Science roles.
  • A tertiary qualification in Health, Safety, Science, or a related discipline.
  • A passion for influencing and inspiring leadership in safety and security.
  • Exceptional communication and engagement skills, with the ability to adapt to various audiences and leadership styles.
  • Experience in projects, commercial operations, and contractor management (highly desirable).
  • A proven track record of delivering team outcomes and meeting deadlines reliably.
  • Confidence in leading change through vision, empowerment, and effective execution of change management processes.
  • Strong capability in contractor engagement and performance management, including the ability to critically assess and challenge HSE performance.
