About the Role
Reporting to the Lead of Inbound Maritime, the Principal Inbound Maritime plays a critical role in enabling the inbound maritime team to operate in a well‑governed and efficient manner. This role provides expert supply chain and maritime logistics advice to the business, supporting the optimisation of international inbound freight decisions to deliver bottom‑line cost savings while maintaining a strong risk lens.
You will work closely with Procurement and key stakeholders to influence freight choices during the sourcing of goods, ensuring safe, efficient, and value‑driven outcomes across the end‑to‑end inbound supply chain. This role requires strong technical expertise, commercial acumen, and the ability to navigate complex, global logistics environments while supporting BHP’s commitment to safety, sustainability, and operational excellence.
Main Responsibilities
- Partner with Procurement teams (OPEX and CAPEX) to provide detailed inbound maritime and supply chain expertise, advising on international freight cost and routing options.
- Apply end‑to‑end supply chain knowledge to enhance efficiency, drive optimisation, and maximise value across inbound logistics.
- Execute and optimise shipping practices through strong understanding of materials, vessel types, ports, and maritime operations.
- Apply logistics management procedures to safely and efficiently meet business and stakeholder requirements.
- Influence and negotiate outcomes that achieve mutually beneficial commercial and operational results.
- Support vendor and customer selection, contract management, and performance monitoring to maximise operational and financial outcomes while mitigating risk.
- Plan, track, and manage logistics‑related projects to generate value and deliver defined outcomes.
- Identify, assess, and manage risks using BHP’s risk management framework, contributing to a strong risk‑aware culture and safe performance.
About You
- More than 8 years of experience in the maritime industry, logistics, or supply chain roles.
- Degree or postgraduate qualification in Maritime Studies, International Commerce, Maritime Engineering, Business Analysis, or a related field.
- Deep understanding of inbound supply chain operations and international freight.
- Strong knowledge of the maritime industry and the energy transition outlook.
- High attention to detail with the ability to work effectively across all levels of the organisation and deliver outcomes on time.
- Demonstrated experience challenging existing supply chain practices and implementing new ways of working.
- Experience collaborating with internal and external stakeholders across different locations.
- Experience supporting critical consumables supply chains.
- Exposure to project logistics is desirable but not essential.
- Advanced proficiency in both English and Spanish.
