About the Role

 

 

The role will be to lead and manage the implementation, monitoring, evaluation, and governance of the Indigenous Peoples Plan for Chile.

 

Main Accountabilities:

 

•    Provide advisory services to Indigenous Relations teams regarding indigenous engagement plans and strategies, including coordination with the BHP Foundation and Escondida.

•    Collaborate with asset teams and global functions on requirements for research and evaluation, such as national surveys for leaders, the state of relations with Indigenous Peoples, annual impact and opportunity assessments, human rights assessments, among others.

•    Collaborate with asset teams, explorations, and projects on strategy, planning, and stakeholder engagement requirements related to the implementation of FPIC (Free, Prior, and Informed Consent), stakeholder registration in Borealis, and the complaints and grievances procedure.

•    Verify Functional Standards, conduct self-assessments, train the team, and plan and budget for actions.

•    Identify and control risks related to indigenous participation that could affect BHP Latam's interests.

•    Support in report drafting, data collection, presentation preparation, and monitoring the fulfillment of tasks related to indigenous peoples.

 

About You

 

 

To be a top performer you will need:

 

•   Professional degree related to the role. 

•    A minimum of 10 years of professional experience and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in delivering Indigenous engagement strategies for resource development projects.
•    Knowledge and experience with Indigenous consultation processes in Chile, related legislation and policy, and international standards for Indigenous engagement such as the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the concept of Free, Prior and Informed Consent
•    Knowledge and experience in the mining (or related) sector, particularly in relation to regulatory processes, environmental assessments, risk management and international standards on sustainability. 
•    Proven ability to establish relationships with Indigenous communities and associations in Chile based on trust, partnership, and mutual respect.
•    High ability to develop ideas in writing. Commercial skills and experience related to agreement-making and implementation with Indigenous organizations related to natural resource projects.
•    Knowledge and experience with social investment programs is considered an asset, particularly in relation to the design, management, and evaluation of community investment programs.
•    Knowledge and experience with socio-environmental projects is considered an asset, including collaborative monitoring programs, ecosystem conservation, cultural heritage and related projects.  
•    Experience coordinating policy and programs with industry groups.
•    Advanced Spanish and English proficiency.
