Job Description


As a member of the BHP’s International Relations and Public Policy Team (IRPP), this role is accountable for supporting the IRPP team’s work in the development and execution BHP’s response and engagement on international relations and global policy issues, in Australia. The role will focus on:

  • Guiding and supporting BHP’s engagement in international relations and international affairs in Australia with a focus on key jurisdictions (China, Chile, US, UK, EU).
  • Engaging and building relationships with international bodies and organisations in Australia to assist BHP execute its agenda with relevant international jurisdictions and to engage on global policy issues.
  • Identifying and monitoring public policy trends both in key jurisdictions of interest.
  • Assisting in building advocacy agendas for public policy outcomes to advance BHP’s key policy interests.
  • Assisting in global geopolitical monitoring, insight and analysis.
  • Helping IRPP support the BHP’s Risk function in maintaining BHP’s current and emerging risk frameworks.

Skills and Other Qualifications


To be successful in this role, the candidate is likely to have a degree in politics, international relations, public policy, economics or other suitable qualification. In addition, we are seeking specific attributes such as:

  • Functional expertise in public policy analysis and advice, particularly in Australia.
  • Experience in government, or working closely with government, particularly in areas of international relations and public policy.
  • Very strong external engagement and advocacy skills including good experience in engagement in Australia on international relations issues and public policy issues, with existing networks with international bodies, external forums and relevant government bodies and politicians in Australia.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including an ability to draft sound and logical policy analysis advice particularly for internal audiences.
  • Excellent analytical skills with an ability to undertake critical thinking and analysis on complex issues.
  • Good commercial acumen and able to adopt a commercial, business focused approach in considering issues and implications of public policy.
  • Ability to work in a matrixed organisation, including navigating cross-functional relationships to build internal networks to successfully and efficiently deliver outcomes.
  • Ability to work with ambiguity and complexity and adapt in line with changing business priorities.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities in order to deliver to deadline.
  • Team player, with an enthusiasm and interest in contributing to team culture.
