At BHP, we believe our purpose goes beyond mining: we work to improve lives and create a more sustainable future. We are a global resources company with operations in more than 90 locations worldwide.

Our North American presence continues to grow as we invest in future-facing commodities, including potash through the Jansen project in Canada. We focus on building strong relationships with communities, governments, and partners while delivering value through safe, responsible, and sustainable operations.

We excel in operations and asset acquisition, fostering innovative technologies to enhance safety, productivity, and sustainability while upholding our social commitments. At BHP, our people are at the heart of everything we do, and we are committed to creating an environment where everyone can thrive and contribute to meaningful impact.

Why BHP?

At BHP, we are transforming the way mining is done. We embrace innovation, sustainability, and inclusion to build a smarter, safer, and more human future. At BHP, you’ll be part of a team that values safety, integrity, performance, and collaboration.

We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Media, North America, reporting to the Head of Global Media.

The Challenge Ahead

This is a unique opportunity to shape how BHP is seen across Canada and the United States. As Principal Media, North America, you will lead a high-impact media strategy that strengthens our reputation in Canada, grows our visibility in the U.S., and contributes to BHP’s global narrative.

You will operate at the intersection of strategy and execution—partnering with senior leaders, corporate affairs, and investor relations to deliver clear, consistent, and compelling messaging. This role plays a key part in supporting global business priorities, including market-sensitive communications and major projects such as Jansen.

You will also help position BHP as a leader in sustainable resources by shaping the narrative around potash and its role in global food security and environmental stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead BHP’s media strategy across Canada and the United States, aligned with global priorities
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with national, financial, business, and trade media
  • Drive proactive storytelling while effectively managing reactive media engagement
  • Strengthen BHP’s brand and reputation in Canada and expand presence in the U.S.
  • Serve as a core member of the global media team, ensuring alignment on messaging and announcements
  • Advise senior executives on media strategy, messaging, and reputation management
  • Prepare leaders for media interviews, speaking engagements, and public appearances
  • Lead North America media strategy for the Jansen potash project and contribute to the global potash narrative
  • Support communications related to mergers, acquisitions, divestments, and strategic business initiatives
  • Partner with Legal, Investor Relations, and Corporate Affairs on market-sensitive communications
  • Oversee the development of media materials including press releases, speeches, briefing notes, and Q&As
  • Lead issues and crisis communications, including preparedness, planning, and response
  • Track media interest, sentiment, and trends to inform strategy and decision-making

What You'll Bring to the Role

You are an experienced communications leader who thrives in a complex, global environment and brings a strong understanding of the North American media landscape.

  • 10+ years’ experience in media relations, corporate communications, or journalism
  • Deep understanding of Canadian and U.S. media landscapes, with established networks
  • Experience supporting mergers & acquisitions or market-sensitive communications
  • Strong understanding of natural resources, agriculture, infrastructure, or large-scale projects (preferred)
  • Exceptional storytelling, writing, and message development skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead in complex, global, matrixed organizations
  • Experience in issues and crisis management
  • Strong ability to influence and advise senior leaders and diverse stakeholders

Work Location

This role is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, offering access to one of North America’s leading business and media hubs. You will work closely with regional and global teams, with opportunities to contribute to international priorities and initiatives.
