About the Role
Provides technical leadership and direction in the identification, evaluation, and implementation of methane abatement initiatives across BHP/BMA’s operations. This role supports the Lead and Manager Methane Management in delivering BHP/BMA’s fugitive methane reduction goals through innovation, rigorous analysis, and cross-functional collaboration.
Responsibilities:
- Supports the design and delivery of the Methane Management Identification Phase Study, ensuring robust planning and execution.
- Contributes to the creation of a comprehensive Life of Mine Fugitive Methane Emissions Management Plan across BMA sites.
- Identifies, assesses, and recommends emerging methane abatement technologies, regulatory / policy changes, industry trends, etc to enhance emissions reduction outcomes.
- Develops and maintains methane emissions models and tools, developing insights to inform decision-making.
- Partners with internal experts, site teams, and external stakeholders to ensure alignment on development of methane abatement strategies.
- Applies deep expertise in climate science and societal trends to guide methane management strategies that align with BHP/BMA’s public climate commitments.
- Coordinates cost and schedule performance tracking with internal stakeholder functions to support project management activities.
- Makes strategic, data-driven decisions that support long-term business objectives and climate resilience.
- Identifies and mitigates risks using BHP’s risk framework, fostering a culture of safety and accountability.
- Supports the Manager Power East in delivering other study-related initiatives and deliverables as required.
About You
- Must hold a Bachelor's Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Commerce
- With strong technical background in coal mining and gas management, or coal seam gas reservoirs, including modelling, permeability, and gas composition.
- With proven ability to lead technical studies in complex operational environments.
- With experience across both operational and functional environments, with a strong understanding of open cut coal mine planning and operations.
- Demonstrated capability in managing climate-related risks and developing decarbonisation strategies aligned with long-term sustainability goals.
- With proven track record in designing, managing, and delivering complex projects within a corporate or industrial setting.
- Combines technical depth with commercial insight, contributing to strategy development, investment evaluation, and business planning.
- Applies strong business acumen to connect methane abatement and adaptation measures with broader decarbonisation objectives.
