About the Role
The New Markets Delivery Office (NMDO) exists to accelerate BHP's transformation in New Markets spend, savings and supplier relationships by unlocking new sources of supply, strengthening strategic partnerships and enabling sustainable long-term value creation.
The Principal Logistics is a critical member of the China Hub, responsible for designing and enabling fit-for-purpose logistics solutions that support the successful execution of BHP's New Markets strategy.
The role provides strategic and operational logistics expertise across sourcing, supplier development, contracting and execution activities, ensuring that logistics considerations are fully integrated into commercial decisions and total cost of ownership assessments.
The role acts as the key in-country logistics advisor to Procurement, Assets, Projects and suppliers, supporting the development of resilient, efficient and scalable supply chains from China and Southeast Asia into BHP's global operations.
Key accountabilities:
Lead In-country Logistics Strategy and Planning
- Working closely with onshore supply chain enablement teams to develop logistics strategies and delivery models that support New Markets growth and supply chain diversification objectives.
- Advise Procurement and stakeholders on in-country logistics capabilities, constraints, risks and cost optimisation opportunities during sourcing and market engagement activities.
- Integrate logistics considerations into sourcing strategies, supplier evaluations and total cost of ownership assessments.
- Identify and evaluate alternative logistics solutions to improve supply chain efficiency, resilience and value delivery.
Enable Effective Supplier and Market Engagement
- Support supplier development activities by providing logistics expertise and guidance on transportation, packaging, export requirements and delivery models.
- Ensure suppliers understand BHP logistics, packaging and delivery standards.
- Assess supplier logistics maturity and capability and identify improvement opportunities.
- Support supplier onboarding and readiness activities to ensure successful execution
Manage Logistics Risk and Supply Chain Performance
- Provide visibility of logistics risks, lead times, export constraints, capacity limitations and market disruptions.
- Proactively identify and mitigate logistics risks that could impact cost, schedule, quality or supply continuity.
- Monitor market developments, freight trends and transportation networks to inform business decisions.
- Support contingency planning and risk mitigation strategies to improve supply resilience.
Drive Execution Excellence
- Ensure logistics requirements are clearly incorporated into sourcing strategies, contracts and supplier delivery plans.
- Provide in-country support during execution to facilitate on-time delivery and rapid resolution of logistics issues.
- Coordinate with suppliers, freight providers and internal stakeholders to support delivery performance.
- Support execution readiness activities for major sourcing initiatives and projects.
Packaging and Compliance Management
- Ensure packaging solutions meet contractual, regulatory and operational requirements.
- Verify supplier understanding and compliance with BHP packaging, transportation and export standards.
- Promote best practice logistics and packaging approaches that protect product quality and minimise delivery risks.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to improve logistics performance and reduce waste across the supply chain.
Stakeholder Management and Collaboration
- Build trusted relationships with Procurement, Operations, Projects and supplier stakeholders.
- Act as the primary logistics advisor within the China Hub and support cross-functional decision making.
- Influence stakeholders by providing practical logistics recommendations that balance cost, risk and operational requirements.
- Collaborate with commercial and technical teams to deliver integrated supply chain solutions.
About You
Experience
- Experience in logistics, supply chain, procurement, manufacturing, mining, heavy industry or related sectors.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex international supply chains and logistics networks.
- Experience supporting capital projects, operational procurement or major equipment supply chains preferred.
- Experience working across China and/or Southeast Asian supply markets highly desirable.
Technical Capability
- Strong understanding of international freight, transportation modes, customs requirements, import/export processes and trade compliance.
- Strong end-to-end supply chain and logistics planning capability.
- Ability to evaluate logistics costs, risks and operational impacts to support sourcing and commercial decisions.
- Experience integrating logistics considerations into total cost of ownership and supply chain optimisation initiatives.
- Strong risk management capability with the ability to identify and mitigate supply chain disruptions.
Leadership and Personal Attributes
- Strong commercial acumen and ability to balance logistics, operational and commercial objectives
