About BHP Ventures

BHP Ventures is BHP’s in house venture capital arm, investing in breakthrough technologies that can make our operations safer, more productive and more sustainable. We work at the frontier of mining, deep tech and innovation—partnering with founders, investors, universities and research institutes to identify, fund and scale technologies in areas such as AI, decarbonisation, automation and advanced materials.

BHP Ventures plays a unique role inside the organisation: translating emerging technology trends into actionable insights, helping shape long term strategy, and bringing fresh perspectives into one of the world’s largest resource companies.

About the Role

We’re seeking a Principal Communications professional to build and run the strategic communications engine for BHP Ventures. This is an exceptional opportunity for someone with  proven experience at transforming complex ideas into clear, compelling narratives that resonate with diverse audiences—including BHP’s executive leadership and key stakeholders across BHP’s global enterprise.

In this role, you will lead end to end communications across Ventures, elevating visibility of the portfolio, driving internal engagement on breakthrough technologies, and bringing the Venture team’s insights and impact into the enterprise.

You will report to the Head of Portfolio Strategy, BHP Ventures, while working in close partnership with the Manager, Leadership Communication, BHP.

If you thrive at the intersection of storytelling, innovation and strategy—and want a platform to influence how one of Australia’s largest companies understands emerging technology—this role offers a rare and exciting opportunity.

Accountabilities

   1. Communications Strategy & Delivery

  • Lead and continually evolve all BHP Ventures communication channels, including newsletters, venture updates and digital content across internal platforms.
  • Own communications end to end—from identifying great stories to producing high quality content and coordinating design and delivery.
  • Track and analyse engagement metrics, using insights to refine communication strategy and increase impact.

   2. Content, Insights & Executive Storytelling

  • Translate insights from founders, venture investors, universities and external partners into clear, accessible content for BHP leaders and the broader enterprise.
  • Develop high impact presentations and materials that educate and inspire senior stakeholders on emerging technologies, including AI, decarbonisation, automation and other disruptive trends.
  • Prepare speeches, briefing notes, talking points and panel materials for senior leaders.
  • Provide tailored external communications support—including LinkedIn content and thought leadership—for the VP Ventures and Head of Portfolio Strategy.

   3. Events & Internal Engagement

  • Design and deliver engaging internal events that showcase portfolio company capabilities and build awareness of new technologies across BHP.
  • Serve as on site lead for events, coordinating messaging, logistics and follow up actions (domestic travel required; occasional international travel may be needed).
  • Manage an integrated internal engagement calendar to ensure sequencing, alignment and strategic visibility.

   4. Stakeholder & Partner Management

  • Manage external agencies and partners (design, digital, events) to ensure high quality, on brand output.
  • Build strong relationships with Internal Communications, Corporate Affairs, Digital and other stakeholders to maintain alignment with enterprise standards.
  • Collaborate widely to ensure all communications are consistent, audience appropriate and reflective of BHP Ventures’ strategic priorities.

About You

You are a highly capable communications professional with a passion for shaping narratives that demystify complex, technical subject matter. You excel at working with senior stakeholders, synthesising diverse inputs and delivering polished, high impact communications.

You bring many of the following strengths:

  • Exceptional writing, editing and storytelling capability, with experience producing clear, compelling content across formats (newsletters, presentations, briefing notes, events; video skills a bonus).
  • An audience‑first mindset with excellent judgement on tone, message framing and channel selection.
  • Experience developing communications strategies for internal and/or external audiences.
  • Confidence working with digital tools and analytics, with a strong aptitude for learning new technologies.
  • Curiosity about technology, innovation and emerging trends, and an ability to translate technical concepts into simple, engaging language.
  • Strong influencing and relationship‑building skills, including with executives.
  • Experience collaborating with cross‑functional teams to deliver high‑quality outputs.

Highly regarded but not essential:

  • Experience in venture capital, start ups, corporate innovation, or technology sectors.

Not required:

  • Prior experience in mining or resources.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related discipline preferred.

Open for applications until 19-Feb-2026.
