About the Role


We currently have an opportunity for a full-time, permanent employee to join BHPs Global Indigenous & Local Procurement Team in the role of Principal Indigenous & Traditional Owner Procurement, based in Brisbane. 


This position will be responsible for driving and sustaining engagement and connectivity between BHP and Traditional Owner & Indigenous suppliers across our BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) and New South Wales Energy Coal (NEC) operations. This role is critical in supporting BHP’s commitment to increase sustainable economic opportunities for Traditional Owner & Indigenous communities and supporting BHP to achieve our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) contracting commitments.  


Working within a passionate and supportive team, you will use your broad range of skills including stakeholder engagement, problem solving, and commercial acumen to drive commercial and social value outcomes.  


Your responsibilities will include 


  • Support Operations, Procurement, and appropriate Functions to identify opportunities for Indigenous and Traditional Owner vendors at a commercial and Asset level and track progress on forecast pipelines.  
  • Connect Operations, Procurement, and appropriate Function with capable Indigenous and Traditional Owner suppliers in the lead up to respective sourcing requirements or tender processes.  
  • Participate in cross-functional projects with Operations, Procurement, Indigenous Engagement, and other functional partners to accelerate and grow existing and new economic opportunities for Indigenous and Traditional Owner businesses. 
  • Relationship management, both internally and externally, including engagement with BHP leaders and functions.  
  • Nurture Indigenous businesses and support them to build capability and scale, providing guidance as required. Supporting contract management activities where also required. 
  • Track data; report against Indigenous spend targets and commitments to demonstrate achievements (e.g. Government, RAP, Agreement and Social Value reporting). 
  • Participate in sourcing and tender evaluation processes. 
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities and collaborate with key stakeholders to directly and indirectly influence the implementation of agreed initiatives.  
  • Provide direct input and hands-on support into our team’s strategy development and execution.  

About You

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant industry experience;  
  • Extensive demonstrated experience in working with Indigenous/Traditional Owner stakeholders; 
  • Extensive experience effectively managing and influencing internal and external stakeholders; 
  • Commercial experience including procurement or related business acumen is an advantage.  
  • Strong communication and engagement skills, ability to adapt to suit target audience;  
  • Demonstrated ability to reliably deliver team results and meet deadlines;  
  • Ability to engage and work effectively with both senior internal and external stakeholders. Influence diverse teams.  
  • The capacity to manage complexity and clarify ambiguity.
