The Projects
The primary objective of the Copper South Australia (CuSA) Growth Portfolio is to capture the emerging copper market opportunity, driven by an expected supply/demand gap and aligned with the Company goal of increasing volume through growth. BHP’s stated business objectives for CuSA including increasing copper production, along with requirements for capital efficiency, low-cost production, and adherence to BHP’s social value commitments and initiatives.
The Mine and Concentrator Growth (MCG) and Carrapateena Expansion Stage 2 (CXPS2) Projects are mine and concentrator projects and will provide incremental concentrate production as a feed source to the expanded Smelter and Refinery that will be delivered by the Smelter Refinery Stage 1 Project. Given the similarities in scope and project objectives, MCG and CXPS2 will be delivered as a Program of Works herein named the Cave to Concentrate Program (C2C).
About the Role
We have an exciting opportunity for a principal to join the Projects Commercial Owner Team (OT) that supports the C2C Project teams based in Adelaide (ad-hoc travel to site only).
The role has two key focuses:
1. BHP OT Managed Agreements: Provides technical expertise in the development of contract strategies, tendering and award of contracts, planning, administration and management of contracts, review, analysis, negotiation and settlement of claims, and close out of contracts.
2. EPCM Managed Agreements:
- Technical assurance and support to the EPCM team to comply with BHP processes procedures and Agreement conditions.
- Interface between BHP Procurement and Contracts internal stakeholders and the EPCM.
- Expedite BHP internal approvals as required.
In this role you will:
1.BHP OT managed agreements
- Develop straegies, undertake sourcing, execute new contracts with corporate governance requirements and relevant statutory obligations.
- Engage with Emerging Markets, Portfolio Sourcing and other sourcing divisions to determines the most effective sourcing options and contracting approach given scope scale, risk and value profile.
- Work with the Industry Capability Network on the registration of packages for AIP compliance.
- Develop and implement advanced commercial techniques to leverage value creation opportunities.
- Mange the Procurement and Contracts tendering, evaluation, negotiation and award process in compliance to BHP procedures.
- Manages the post award Agreement administration in compliance with the Agreement Terms and BHP procedures, including the assessment of monthly progress claims and variation management and closeout.
- Demonstrate compliance to the Project schedule through maintaining of the Procurement Packaging register.
2. EPCM managed agreements
- Provides technical guidance and inputs to the ECPM as required.
- Review EPCM deliverables to ensure compliance to BHP standards and requirements.
- Interfaces between BHP internal procurement and contracts stakeholders and the EPCM procurement and contracts teams.
- Ensures Vendors and Agreements are managed in BHP systems and in compliance to BHP procedures.
- Expedites BHP internal approvals as required.
To support the Team culture and performance, you will:

- Support BHP’s implementation of its social value goals including Indigenous and Traditional Owner contracting partnerships and participation in our workforce.
- Support the Projects Commercial Manager in providing functional expertise, mentoring, coaching and guidance.
- Participate in and foster a safe positive team culture.
About You
Mandatory
- A subject matter expert with extensive experience in a contract and/or commercial role, ideally within a major projects and/or construction environment (e.g. mining, oil and gas, water, defence or infrastructure).
- Sound commercial acumen and financial evaluation skills, with excellent judgement to deliver the best outcomes for the BHP business.
- Experience on construction projects negotiating contract terms, as well as setting contract and procurement strategies for complex projects.
- A collaborative and inclusive approach, with advanced communication skills.
- Strong prioritisation and organizational management skills.
- Strong coaching and mentoring ability.
- Ability to think laterally to independently resolve issues and influence change.
Skills and Qualifications - Desirable
- Tertiary qualifications in quantity surveying/procurement, construction management, engineering, business, finance or legal studies.
- Experience with complex contract models including EPC, EPCM, D&C and partnering.
