Our Operations
Our South Australian operations consist of three primary mine assets, containing some of the world's most significant deposits of copper, gold and uranium; Carrapateena is one of the largest mining projects in the state in the last 10 years, Olympic Dam is a globally renowned deposit with nearly 700km of underground roads and tunnels, and Prominent Hill produces one of the highest grades of Copper in the world. Beyond this at Oak Dam exploration undertaken to date has indicated the presence of high-grade copper and associated minerals. The plan is clear and the future is bright in BHP South Australia’s Copper Province.
About the Role
An exciting opportunity exists to join the Copper South Australia (CuSA) Health, Safety, Security and Emergency Management (HSSEM) Team in the role of reporting through to the Superintendent Asset Radiation.
As a part of the Asset team, you will be an instrumental player in leading and supporting radiation management initiatives, as well as improving the site radiation management plans across Copper South Australia sites. You will identify and assess safety, health and environmental risks and recommend radiation management controls and improve existing controls and ways of working with your radiation SME peers. You will also advise on health & safety matters in the workplace that potentially impact human health from radiation work-related sources.
This position will be working in the BHP Adelaide office on a 5/2 Monday to Friday Roster with regular site travel as required.
In this role you will:
- Provide coaching and subject matter advice to asset and line management, and external customers on key radiation plans and regulatory requirements
- Responsible for the execution of the radiation horizon improvement plans to meet internal and external requirements
- Anticipate, identify, assess, recommend and verify controls on radiation exposures and management
- Contribute to the strategic direction of radiation management in Copper SA
- Be responsible for delivering radiation improvement projects or initiatives to meet internal and external requirements
- Ensure the success of our exposure reduction strategy by engaging and influencing senior leaders to progress radiation business plan initiatives at our sites
- Support the review cycle of radiation exposure related training and awareness packages
- Contribute to the development of operational radiation team members and build capability in the wider HSSEM team and workforce
About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

- Tertiary qualifications in Physics, Radiation Protection or other relevant fields
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in radiation management
- Experience leading change and in delivering operation-wide radiation related improvement initiatives or projects in mining or other similar industries.
- Knowledge of radiation safety regulations set by EPA, ARPSANA, ICRP and IAEA
- Ability to engage, coach and influence multiple stakeholders at varying levels of the organisation on radiation-related initiatives or matters
- Practical experience in radiation safety, industry transformation and regulatory engagement
- Ability to collaborate in a high performing technical team while also engaging and supporting a wider peer network in operational teams
- Strong planning and time management skills
- Ability to work autonomously while also thriving in a collaborative team environment
