About the Role

 

 

The Principal Metallurgist Refinery provides deep technical expertise in the metallurgical operations,  improvement initiatives and growth opportunities across the electro-refining, electro-winning and gold room processes at the dynamic, highly integrated and interesting Olympic Dam Operations.

 

You will support the production of world class quality copper cathode, gold and silver bullion products for our customers. The role will support, lead and select technical pathways in supporting production and technical teams, performance improvement initiatives and technical growth opportunities across the Refinery and Gold Room flowsheet.

 

Coupled with your exceptional technical capabilities, you will have strong stakeholder engagement capabilities that demonstrates a strong team-of-teams approach. Key stakeholder teams will include operations, technical, maintenance, reliability, control room, technology, study, project, process safety and other functional groups across the CuSA and BHP business.

 

 

This role will be based at Olympic Dam on a 5/2, 4/3 roster basis (with flexibility as discussed with your leader).  FIFO from Adelaide, DIDO or residential options are available.

 

 

In this role you will also:

 

  • Develop, coordinate, lead and deliver strategic and critical metallurgical improvements programs utilising the specialist resources of internal operational and external stakeholder groups.
  • Identify technologies, processes and equipment, apply relevant testwork and data to develop a basis of safe design for process improvement, operations and optimisation with consideration to health, safety, and environment. 
  • Design metallurgical test work and plant trials that deliver insights to design and improve refinery and gold room operations. 
  • Develop, implement and monitor sampling-analysis protocols & QA/QC programs to quantify the quality, risks and compliance of metallurgical data. 
  • Analyse and model data to draw out insights and solutions that address business challenges and opportunities. 
  • Provide industry leading mentoring, coaching and development of site resources to support and improve technical capabilities of our professional metallurgical team and developing engineers.

About You

 

  • Tertiary qualifications in Metallurgy, Chemical or Process Engineering
  • Significant demonstrated metallurgical experience in operational and technical improvement environments
  • Experience in Copper Refineries is required
  • Strong understanding of Electro-Refining and Gold Room Processes
  • Proven ability to support and develop technical teams through mentorship and coaching
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in analysing a diverse range of information for troubleshooting and problem solving
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills, with experience in working with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
