About the Role

The Principal Resource Characterisation will lead best practice in resource characterisation of subsurface and disturbed material. The role will focus on the economic component to inform resource extraction and mine management processes. The role will support the Manager Resource Knowledge in the assurance of risk-based geoscience models of the subsurface and disturbed material to inform the entire life cycle of resources, from resource definition through to mine closure.  

  • Thought leadership in the multidisciplinary characterisation of rock mass performance with a focus on the economic material through extraction, processing and closure. 
  • Support of appropriate governance requirements for economic management to inform decisions throughout the entire resource value chain (including resource estimation, extraction, processing, and closure) within and external to BHP.
  • Development of the awareness and capability of BHP geoscientists, geotechnical engineers, hydrologists, mine planners, metallurgists and closure practitioners in the design and delivery of resource characterisation models, with quantified uncertainty, to inform business decisions throughout the resource value chain.
  • Building of trusted relationships with and between BHP Operations and Planning and Technical groups.
  • Identification of key knowledge gaps in the ability to create and deliver resource characterisation models and maintenance of research roadmaps to influence allocation of resources to research and development initiatives.
  • Influence, lead and manage resource characterisation research to address knowledge deficiencies identified collaboratively with asset or functional peers within BHP.
  • Promoting BHP as leaders in resource characterisation to the external technical community, including universities, research institutions and professional organisations. 

About You

  • Demonstrated 15 years of geoscience or metallurgy throughout the resource value chain, from resource delineation through to closure in an industry capacity.
  • Has a record of successfully mentoring and coaching geoscientists.
  • Has led teams achieving innovative breakthroughs in understanding or application of risk-based resource characterisation to inform business decisions.
  • Demonstrated deep technical expertise in resource characterisation and its application to business decisions
  • Evidence of technical thought leadership in influencing research directions.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt to new concepts through breadth of applied science-based work experience.
