About Potash
The Jansen project in Saskatchewan, Canada is set to become one of the largest potash mines in the world and is located approximately 140 kilometers east of Saskatoon. BHP’s CAD$14 billion (US$10.5 billion) investment in the Jansen project will deliver a potash mine in Saskatchewan designed to maximize sustainability. As the largest investment in Saskatchewan’s history, Jansen is expected to generate approximately 5,500 workforce opportunities during construction and 900 long-term roles.
Jansen's construction will take place over several years with first production planned for late 2026. Once fully ramped up, Jansen is expected to have an initial production capacity of approximately 8.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), with the potential to produce 16 to 17 Mtpa in future stages. Work Location
This role will be based at the BHP Jansen Mine Site located in Leroy, SK. The associated work schedule will be 40 hours per week.
As this role is not eligible for accommodation in the site camp, the incumbent must live within a reasonable commuting distance of the Jansen site. BHP offers domestic relocation assistance to support the successful incumbent in transitioning, if required. Benefits offered as part of the relocation program include (but are not limited to) new home purchase assistance, temporary accommodations, home finding trip and a relocation allowance.
Purpose
The Principal Rock Mechanics will provide technical expertise in the geotechnical characterization, design, and instrumentation of underground rock excavations. They will be responsible to plan, develop and direct the mine geotechnical monitoring scope (e.g. extensometers, ground support, etc.) and the QA/QC of said installations. The role will provide in field guidance to the Production Team, infield verification of ground support installation and ground control analysis. Ensures the scope of planned geotechnical services are enabled and scheduled in the production execution plan/strategy.
About the Role
In this role, you will:
- Performs characterization, compiles models and conducts geotechnical analysis to assess ground control performance within soft rock mining practices.
- Develops geotechnical designs with the ability to stamp drawings within established standards and collaborates with BHP Planning & Technical on developing non routine designs or deviations from standards
- Selects target areas and appropriate methodologies for sampling and data collection to build ore body knowledge
- Collects, analyses, and interprets geotechnical data on deformation history through the application of mapping and structural modelling techniques
- Controls owner for risk’s associated with Ground Control failure
- Selects methodologies and analyses geological/geometric data to improve organizational knowledge on structural deformation (e.g. characterize deformation structures and flow paths, infer direction and magnitude, measure deformation etc.).
- Establishes and tracks operational targets, performance metrics and KPIs to implement mitigation controls for addressing non-compliances or trigger/threshold exceedances.
- Gives guidance to the Production and Short-term planning functions on required critical controls for mine design and excavation.
- Is Subject Matter Expert for geotechnical training program for all underground personnel and part of building risk aware culture to support safe and productive performance outcomes
About You
- A recognized bachelor’s degree in mining engineering or equivalent combination of education, training, or work experience
- 10+ years of relevant experience within underground soft rock mining or related industries
- Extensive knowledge of the Mining and Soft Rock Mechanics industry and related infrastructure and equipment
- Working knowledge of mine construction and soft rock mechanics processes
- Registered Member of APEGS
