Job Profile


The Integrated Closure Planning team collaboratively implements the closure management process to develop robust closure strategies that deliver economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable optimized closure outcomes across the Legacy Assets portfolio.

The Principal – Senior Analyst Closure Opportunities role supports the identification, evaluation and pursuit of options that extract value (economic and non-economic) from our portfolio of closed mines across North America.

About the Role


To be successful in this role, you will:

  • Translate key market trends into new opportunities to extract value from our portfolio of closed sites and work with internal leadership to prioritize potential opportunities (including discarding opportunities with insufficient merit)
  • Develop strategic opportunities that consider and support the achievement of functional, operational and Asset objectives; and balance conceptual thinking with sound judgment and pragmatism to navigate highly complex and ambiguous decision making
  • Anticipate decision consequences, risk implications and social value outcomes of decisions to generate and select options that will drive intended outcomes
  • Identify business metrics to measure value and balance risk and reward against the key drivers of an opportunity
  • Evaluate the risks and benefits of potential opportunities and select those that will provide the greatest value
  • Use a range of statistical methods and frameworks/methodologies to quantify and compare the financial value, risk and uncertainty associated with different opportunities
  • Lead development of business cases for initiatives that clearly articulates the commercial value of the opportunity and the risks/uncertainties involved in proposing controls to maximize value
  • Build and maintain partnerships with internal leaders, data providers, researchers and professional service firms to improve Legacy Assets analytical skillsets and access to data and information on potential repurposing opportunities
  • Identify and manage multiple workstreams and directly work with internal subject matter experts and external advisors to provide technical input
  • Actively source and synthesize various forms of market intelligence and interpret its relevance for Legacy Assets

Work Location


This position will be based in either of BHP’s corporate offices located in Tucson, AZ or Saskatoon, SK.
The associated work schedule will be 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home) is standard for BHP.

BHP offers relocation assistance to support the successful incumbent in transitioning, if required. Benefits offered as part of the relocation program include (but are not limited to) new home purchase assistance, temporary accommodations, home finding trip and a resettlement allowance.

About You


To be successful in this role you require:

  • Tertiary qualification – finance, commercial, environment or other related discipline
  • 10+ years’ experience in resources, heavy industry or manufacturing advantageous but not critical
  • Proven experience working within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Effective strategic and critical thinking skills
  • Effective engagement and influencing skills with internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated capacity to prioritize work and tasks by identifying and focussing on the critical few things that add most value, as well as reducing complexity
  • Experience collaborating and working effectively within small, high performing teams
  • Experience working on Green Energy Projects advantageous but not critical
