Purpose
The Principal Strategy & Planning will lead the development and integration of strategic business plans and closure strategies for North America legacy assets, ensuring optimized value creation, risk management, and sustainable post closure outcomes through robust analysis, stakeholder engagement, and disciplined execution.
About the Role
To be successful in this role, you will:
- Support development of robust closure strategies that balance value creation, risk, and sustainability for legacy assets.
- Frame opportunities and define strategic alternatives (including “Optimized Without”) to support robust decision evaluation.
- Facilitate workshops and deliver presentations using structured storytelling to connect, influence, and drive alignment.
- Capture and incorporate stakeholder input into strategies and post‑closure outcomes.
- Identify, quantify, and integrate closure and business risks; apply probabilistic range analysis, decision trees, and value‑of‑information where fit‑for‑purpose.
- Define boundaries and constraints to assess opportunities/risks and decision thresholds.
- Manage and improve the closure knowledge base; embed processes to review and adapt strategies across the asset lifecycle.
- Facilitate generation and iterative review of closure cost estimates, ensuring uncertainties are appropriately captured.
- Prioritize work and resources across multiple assets; develop contingency plans to handle disruptions and changing conditions.
- Lead capital and resource allocation processes to align with enterprise frameworks and strategic goals.
- Use decision evaluation techniques (range analysis, decision trees, value of information) to balance risk and reward.
- Integrate closure knowledge and external inputs to design fit‑for‑purpose closure strategies.
- Resolve cross‑functional dependencies and manage change to protect project schedule, cost, and quality.
- Monitor ongoing context; adjust plans to capture opportunities and mitigate emerging risks.
Work Location
This position will be based in either of BHP’s corporate locations in Arizona, California, Colorado, DC, Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Virginia, or New York. The associated work schedule will be 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home) is standard for BHP.
About You
To be successful in this role you require:
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Sciences, Business, Economics, or related field.
• 10+ years in mining/heavy industry spanning business planning, projects, and site closure.
• Proven leadership of complex, multidisciplinary studies and cross‑functional teams.
• Demonstrated stakeholder engagement and influencing skills.
• Advanced capability in strategic planning, opportunity framing, and investment decision evaluation.
• Proficiency in risk assessment and mitigation.
• Strong project management skills; ability to plan, track, and control delivery across complex initiatives.
• Exceptional communication and presentation skills; facilitation of workshops with diverse stakeholder groups.
