About the Role

Reporting to the Manager Water and Closure Planning, this is a senior role within a growing technical function at Nickel West. In recent years, BHP has placed increasing emphasis on building more resilient and sustainable operations, and water stewardship has become key in this business focus. As part of a small dynamic team, you will be responsible for executing work that helps manage site water-related risks and opportunities. You will be both strategic and tactical in your approach and pragmatic in your execution of tasks.


Your primary focus will be to support Nickel West’s large nickel mining and concentrator operations in the Northern Goldfields. This includes the Mt Keith and Leinster open-cut/underground mines and the Honeymoon Well nickel deposit (yet to be developed). From time to time, you will also be required to support downstream smelter and refinery operations.

In this role you will:            


  • Identify and action opportunities to optimise mine dewatering and water supply, transfer/decant, treatment and use.
  • Develop and maintain site water balances and models, and as effective tools that aid operational decision-making.
  • Provide technical input in to Life of Asset plans, including engineering studies/projects and water infrastructure budgets.
  • Maintain an inventory of all mine water infrastructure, including assessment of what is critical, its condition/maintenance and efficacy.
  • Determine the unit costs of water supply across mines, benchmark these costs and identify actions to reduce these costs/improve efficiency.
  • Regularly travel to Nickel West's mines to build operational knowledge and strengthen key working relationships.
  • Contribute to the positive culture and continued growth of Nickel West’s integrated Water and Closure Planning function.


About You

To be successful in this role you will possess:

  •  A tertiary qualification in Engineering, with post graduate qualifications in a water-related discipline highly regarded.
  • Extensive experience combined with demonstrated success working with mining operations in water engineering or related roles.
  • Highly-developed technical skill set with the ability to quickly grasp strategic, technical and stakeholder issues to solve business requirements.
  • Proven experience in contractor management and delivery of large and small water infrastructure projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal/communication, teamwork and influencing skills.
