Role Purpose

Manage all U.S., Canada, and Trinidad Health and Welfare Program administration for active employees and retirees and implementing strategy to support the business and align with reward philosophy. Provides support to U.S., Mexico, Canada, and Trinidad & Tobago compensation and retirement-focused reward programs as needed.

  •  Day to day administration for all U.S. Health and Welfare Programs – handling employee queries and ensure proper system set up (identifying when corrections and updates are required), including:
    • Medical plus stop loss insurance
    • Pharmacy
    • FSA/HSA Administration
    • Dental
    • Vision
    • Life & AD&D insurance (Basic and Supplemental plus Spouse/Dependent)
    • Disability insurance (Short-term and Long-term)
    • Wellness Programs
    • Family
    • Support Programs
  • Implement strategic decisions for health and welfare programs to ensure programs are aligned to business and support reward philosophy.

About the Role Cont.


  • Coordinate annual Open Enrollment for health and welfare benfits with benefit administrator, including updating materials/guides, system readiness, and communications for active employees and pre-65 retiree groups. Ensure Open Enrollment data is successfully transferred to BHP system in January.
  • Communicate to employees and pre-65 retiree groups regarding benefit plans (Open Enrollment, mid-year updates, etc.) through various Communication channels (weekly newsletter and US Benefits Sharepoint site)
  • Employee and retiree inquiries – Assist HR Operations / GAS Reward in reviewing, researching, and answering employee, former employee, and retiree queries regarding health and welfare programs. Occassionally respond to direct queries from employees and serve as an escalation point.
  • Oversight of agggregated activities to HR Reward Ops team in Manila – continusouly provide guidance and support in aggregated activities (i.e. answering employee queries, e27 Benefits Survey, government requirements (Annual SAR notices, review of ACA 1095 forms), and serve as escalation point for vendors on outstanding invoices, etc.

  • Assist with invoice payment queries from vendors when escalated
  • Oversee HSA and FSA funding (handled by HR Operations payroll team, ensure there are no issues or help step in if there are issues)
  • Support/ provide assistance for local and global Compensation programs and global Reward programs (Global Recognition, ARR, MAP, etc.)
  • Manage U.S. health and welfare external vendor relationships for day-to-day administration of plans and employees/retiree queries.
  • Within global framework, manage, support, and respond to ad hoc requests (market or otherwise) around reward programs (primarily “compensation” programs such as salary structure, STI, LTI, retention, etc.) with Principal governance and support as appropriate.
  • Trinidad & Tobago Rewards Representative supporting plan administration and annual renewals.
  • Vendor management – ensuring contracts, administration and/or recordkeeping align with plan provisions, structure and governance.
  • Employee and retiree inquiries – research, respond or re-direct inquiries regarding the retirement and retiree health plans


About You

  • Degree or equivalent education required
  • Experience with the management and understanding of incentive plans, bonus pooling and relevant reward and remuneration processes
  • Extensive technical experience in remuneration and benefit programs in Americas
  • Strong people management skills (directly or indirectly) in a global company.
  • Excellent communication skills, high attention to detail, and strong analytical skills.
  • Proficient in English and Spanish language


  • Remuneration and Benefit Certification (e.g. World at Work) would be advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of HR practices and compensation/ remuneration cycle management.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle numerous tasks simultaneously while prioritizing and meeting deadlines.
  • Proficiency in use of the Microsoft Office suite, in particular Microsoft Excel Project management skills an advantage. Experience in SAP preferred.

This position with Broken Hill Proprietary (USA), Inc. will be created following the completion of the previously announced transaction between BHP's petroleum business and Woodside (the "Transaction").  Accordingly, this position is contingent upon the completion of the Transaction.
