About the Role

Reporting to the Lead Technical, Power Decarbonisation West within the Operational Decarbonisation business unit, this role will provide power system analysis and engineering services to support multi-disciplinary teams and contribute to the ultimate delivery of the Operational Decarbonisation Program.

 

The role will support BHP in delivering on our commitments by:

  • Supporting the delivery of the Minerals Australia Operational Decarbonisation portfolio, through timely and effective engineering analysis and advice
  • Supporting WA Iron Ore (WAIO)’s future power strategy through the delivery of the WAIO Power Roadmap
  • Maintaining critical relationships to deliver BHP key requirements

 

This role will include:

  • Development, operation and maintenance of power system models to support the WAIO Power Roadmap, reflecting revised demand forecasts, program assumptions and emerging technology options
  • Steady state and dynamic power system studies to test feasibility of alternative supply options and transmission augmentations to identify emerging risks and solutions across WAIO’s networks
  • Effective analysis and communication of complex engineering issues and solutions in a clear and concise manner to support strategic decision making
  • Engaging and managing external vendors to deliver packages of work as needed
  • Ensuring BHP’s values are at the forefront of each team member’s mind
  • Demonstrating strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
  • Collaborating and cooperating within and across teams to identify and deliver innovative value adding solutions
  • Engaging effectively with senior management, project stakeholders and decision-making forums

 

About You

You will have achieved a higher education qualification in Electrical Engineering. With previous exposure in a similar role, you will be able to establish credibility through your strong analytic and excellent communication skills. You will be comfortable working in matrix work environments and as an experienced professional with a passion for solving complex problems, you will bring a strong understanding of power system operation and performance in a world of growing renewable resources and dynamically growing demand.

 

You will take pride in identifying solutions that support BHP’s Decarbonisation Strategy, while ensuring operational reliability and resilience. Success in this role will require strong communication skills, including an ability to produce high quality and concise written reports and presentations for delivery to senior management. Clear articulation of your recommendations, supported by high quality analysis, will be essential.

 

 

Additionally, to be successful in this role, you will have the following:

 

  • Degree qualifications in Electrical Engineering
  • Demonstrated power system modelling skills (steady state and dynamic), with experience in EMT modelling advantageous
  • Demonstrated experience translating power system analysis into actionable power generation, storage and transmission investment pathways, with exposure to network planning or operations within power utilities or the resources sector highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather, synthesise, and present complex information in a clear, concise, and professional manner
  • Strong partnership and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong understanding of transmission infrastructure, with exposure to standards and design advantageous
  • Power utilities or resource sector network planning or operations exposure is highly valued
