About the Role

This position reports to the Lead Electrical Engineer within BHP's Technical Engineering / Engineering Copper SA team, providing expertise in Power Systems (LV & HV) to support the operations and project teams. This job posting demonstrates BHP's focus on electrical safety and technical excellence at their Copper SA operations, particularly emphasizing the critical role of power systems engineering in their safety programs.

 

You will be based at our Adelaide office on a Monday to Friday roster, with occassional site travel required.

 

Key Responsibilities

The role involves comprehensive power systems engineering duties including:

  • Power System Analysis and Design: Load flow, fault levels, contingency, stability and optimisation analysis, harmonics analysis, and arc flash hazard assessment for both AC and DC systems
  • Network Management: Developing and maintaining power systems network models and protection settings
  • Testing and Commissioning: Developing test and commissioning plans for factory and site acceptance testing of protection and control equipment using proprietary equipment such as Omicron/Doble
  • Standards Development: Creating policies, procedures, and standards governing high voltage and low voltage networks and protection systems
  • Fault Investigation: Investigating and analysing protection-related faults and protection operation, developing reports and data including relay settings and configuration files
  • Compliance: Applying sound engineering principles in accordance with industry requirements including AS, IEC/IEEE Standards, Electricity Acts and Regulations, National Electricity Rules, and AEMO guidelines
  • Collaboration: Working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and mentoring younger engineers

 

About You

Ideally you will come with the following education, professional and personal attributes:

  • Graduate or postgraduate electrical engineer with specialisation in Power Systems (desirable)
  • Chartered Professional Engineer status with Engineers Australia (or ability to acquire)
  • Significant experience in design, selection, and installation of electrical equipment and systems.
  • Protection design expertise including testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of HV and LV power systems for oil and gas, mines and mineral processing, heavy industrial and commercial installations.
  • Software proficiency in power system modelling software (ETAP preferred) and equipment-specific supplier software packages for configuration and management of protection parameters, logics and setting files.
  • Substation automation knowledge including Modbus, DNP, IEC 61850, and interface with higher level SCADA systems.
  • Testing experience with protection test equipment and experience in primary and secondary testing of generators, transformers, switchgear, electric motors, and protection relays
  • Positive outlook with ability to motivate and inspire others.
  • Strong written, oral and presentation skills for communicating complex messages to various audiences.
  • Willingness to adapt with changing priorities and focus
