About the Role

 

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced and motivated Senior Mining Engineer (Prestrip) to join a leading open cut coal operation in Queensland's Bowen Basin.

 

In this role, you will play a critical part in delivering safe, efficient, and executable prestrip plans that support successful stripping pathways and remove barriers to operational performance. Working within a collaborative and supportive planning team, you will partner closely with operations, technical services, and leadership to ensure business objectives are achieved safely and sustainably.

 

Reporting to the Superintendent Mine Planning, you will receive ongoing coaching and mentorship from experienced senior leaders, providing excellent opportunities for professional growth and career development.

Operating within a new Critical Path Project Management framework, you will also contribute to an innovative approach to mine planning that drives stable, predictable, and successful delivery of the business plan.

 

The key function of this role will be leading a team of capable truck and shovel engineers, tasked with delivering safe, productive and efficient plans for operational execution, whilst working closely with the execution teams to deliver the planned outcomes within the 90-Day Project Activity Schedule.

 

This position offers exposure to a large-scale mining environment, the opportunity to influence short to medium-term planning outcomes, and the chance to work with a diverse team that values collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities:

 

  • Develop and deliver safe, efficient, and productive prestrip execution plans (dig & dump) for operational teams
  • Work closely with the scheduling team to develop safe, productive, and cost effective short and medium term mine plans
  • Work closely with project managers to implement the 90 day rolling activity schedule
  • Work closely with tactical planning teams to develop pit execution strategies
  • Integrate the SRF and budget critical path enabling activities into the weekly mine plans in a resource balanced approach
  • Produce and maintain concepts aligned to operational requirements
  • Monitor and report schedule compliance
  • Understand site critical paths, buffer risk, and enabling activities along the critical path guiding site schedulers and project managers to deliver on priorities
  • Work closely with operations teams to ensure plans are practical and achievable
  • Communicate planning outcomes clearly to production and execution teams
  • Contribute to incident investigations and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Assist contract management team with daily management of contractor prestrip fleets
  • Build strong cross-functional relationships across planning and operations
  • Strong project management of critical path enablers to support bottleneck stripping processes
  • Coach, develop, and lead a team of capable Prestrip engineers

About You

 

  • Degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent
  • +5 Years experience in open cut coal mine planning, particularly in truck and shovel design, scheduling, and operational management (experience in drill & blast also highly desirable).
  • Proficiency in mining software such as Deswik, Vulcan, and SPRY
  • Demonstrate strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Operate with a results-driven with a focus on safety, efficiency and continuous improvement
  • Exhibit a positive, can-do attitude
  • Able to work in a fast paced and dynamic environment
  • Able to work collaboratively as part of a large team
  • Willingness to lead a team of high performing engineers
