About the Role

Reporting to the Superintendent Asset Performance Below Rail, this role in the Rail Network Capacity (RNC) team supports Rail as a strategic technical leader responsible for driving the performance, reliability and long-term optimisation of the below rail assets across the heavy haul network. 


The role combines deep engineering expertise with strong analytical, operational and stakeholder engagement capability to ensure the rail system meets operational, safety and business performance requirements. 


A key focus is on strategic asset and portfolio planning, providing insights into life of asset performance, master planning, business cases, and supply chain modelling. The role supports annual performance reconciliation processes, evaluates trade offs across cost, safety, and performance, and benchmarks asset performance internally and across the industry.


This role is critical in shaping the future of below rail assets through strategic insight, systems thinking, and technical excellence—ensuring the rail network operates safely, efficiently, and sustainably.
 
Key Responsibilities

 

  • Lead technical rail studies and improvement initiatives, including proof of concept trials, to deliver the rail strategy
  • Partner with internal functions, operation teams and customer groups to understand operational needs, provide responsive technical support, and ensure below rail asset performance aligns with business requirements
  • Develop and coordinate strategy and portfolio planning for below rail assets
  • Contribute to annual performance reconciliation and asset planning for RNC and Rail supply chain modelling support, business case inputs and trade-off evaluations
  • Act as a key interface for below rail technical and operational expertise
  • Provide technical and operational SME input for rail investigations and problem solving
  • Provide insights into life of asset planning, rail master planning, strategic asset plans and Integrated Operations plans
  • Support the development of long-term rail strategy and planning procedures
  • Support strategy and portfolio routines with key stakeholder groups
  • Review performance metrics and benchmark performance across site and industry
  • Conduct trade-off analysis across safety, performance and cost
  • Assist in identifying and assessing risks to enable safe and productive outcomes
  • Support operational teams with specialist engineering solutions and strategies across a wide range of asset types and life cycles to ensure asset integrity and reliability
  • Support the development of asset management and performance KPI’s for below rail assets
    Mentoring and coaching of team members

About You

You are a senior rail infrastructure specialist, with:

 

  • Degree qualified in Engineering (Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or similar, with relevant rail experience)
  • 7-10 years’ experience in Track Engineering/Rail infrastructure
  • Proven experience in rail, preference for heavy haul operations.
  • Track maintenance, project execution and/or operational environment knowledge is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated analytical mindset and ability to translate complex datasets into practical solutions for engineering and operational challenges.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication with the ability to lead, influence and mentor within the engineering community
  • Safety-focused with strong stakeholder engagement capability
  • High level of attention to detail and process accuracy
  • Able to work autonomously, proactively, and meet strict deadlines and targets
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Working knowledge of 1SAP is desirable
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Collaborative technical leader with a strong commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement
