About the Role


The Specialist, Corporate & Exploration Legal will provide advice on and support to BHP Exploration’s activities globally including commercial transactions to capture growth options, the BHP Xplor program, research & development initiatives,  and operational support in various jurisdictions.  The role will also provide the opportunity to support other commercial transactions and activities in Canada and beyond.
This role is expected to deliver independent, commercially focused, strategic advice across all of the subject areas covered by BHP Exploration.

The role will support transactions and operations in Canada and internationally.  This will involve liaising with BHP Exploration personnel and other stakeholder groups across BHP’s offices in Toronto, Tucson, London, Perth, Adelaide and Santiago.  This necessarily involves phone and video calls outside of regular working hours.  The ability to travel within Canada and internationally will also be required in particular to meet the requirements of commercial transactions.

To be successful in this role, you will:

•    Establish and maintain relationships with key internal client groups and stakeholders, with a particular focus on BHP Exploration. 
•    Provide subject matter expertise to client groups on commercial transactions (for example, earn-ins, options, alliances, acquisitions, divestments and joint ventures), support to operations, and on above-ground risks relevant to BHP Exploration’s activities around the world. 
•    Assess, monitor and advise the client groups on commercial and legal risks, including participation in risk reviews. 
•    Lead legal workstreams for projects including management of outside counsel.
•    Demonstrate your commitment to BHP’s Values and making a positive contribution to a high-performing team.  

Work Location


This is a full-time position based in BHP’s Toronto, Canada office. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home in line with company policy) is standard for BHP.

It is a requirement of the role that you are admitted to practise law in Canada or another relevant jurisdiction (or are qualified to do so).
