About Potash
The Jansen project in Saskatchewan, Canada is set to become one of the largest potash mines in the world and is located approximately 140 kilometers east of Saskatoon. BHP’s CAD$14 billion (US$10.5 billion) investment in the Jansen project will deliver a potash mine in Saskatchewan designed to maximize sustainability. As the largest investment in Saskatchewan’s history, Jansen is expected to generate approximately 5,500 workforce opportunities during construction and 900 long-term roles.
Jansen's construction will take place over several years with first production planned for late 2026. Once fully ramped up, Jansen is expected to have an initial production capacity of approximately 8.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), with the potential to produce 16 to 17 Mtpa in future stages. Work Location
Downtown, Saskatoon office. 40 hours per week. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home) is standard for BHP.
This is a 6-month term role with the possibility for extension.
Purpose
The Specialist Corporate Affairs Potash is a member of the Corporate Affairs team, and reports to the Manager Community Potash. The Specialist contributes to the strategic management and execution of Potash’s stakeholder management strategies, plans and initiatives to fulfil BHP’s commitments to communities. This role requires an enthusiastic, detail-oriented professional who likes working in a dynamic local and global team. The ideal candidate will have a knack for understanding our stakeholders and business needs, working with internal stakeholders to minimize project and/or operations impacts on communities, leveraging opportunities, identifying strategic partnerships, and assisting in growing BHP’s reputation.
Key accountabilities:
- Identifies, engages, and manages a range of diverse internal and external stakeholders
- Plans, tracks the delivery of and manages corporate affairs, community relations initiatives, activities, and projects that generate value and drive the achievement of project outcomes including social investment
- Sources information, plans and conducts analyses to support evidence-based decision making in alignment with longer term business objectives
- Engages the capabilities of the entire organization to fulfil BHP’s commitments and purpose
- Identifies and assesses risks, makes risk informed decisions, uses BHP's risk management framework, and builds a risk aware culture to support safe and mutually beneficial performance outcomes
About the Role
Provides specialist level expertise on community related management programs/initiatives/studies and stakeholder management by:
- Seeking to understands stakeholder needs by engaging with stakeholders and asking questions to understand needs/goals
- Managing both internal and external stakeholder expectations with excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Participating on cross-functional teams and community/stakeholder committees, associations, and chambers, as appropriate
- Developing and leveraging stakeholder relationships to deliver mutually beneficial outcomes/results that align with BHP Charter Values
- Critical thinking and analysis to draw insights, trends, and concepts from a wide range of sources and present findings in a format that enables a variety of stakeholders to easily grasp difficult or complex issues
- Supporting planning and implementing work and resources, including recommending activities, studies, and budget required to be successful
- Identifying issues, dependencies and solutions to mitigate associated risks or challenges with a relationship, initiative, or project. Also identify opportunities and partnerships to enhance a relationship, initiative, or project
- Adapting plans to changing conditions and context, identifying, and sharing new risks and opportunities with the team
- Listening and clearly conveying information and updates, uses different communication methods to ensure others understanding the context, purpose, objectives, resources and time frame for work and tasks
- Collaborating with other external affairs function members, including communications, indigenous engagement, social investment, and ethics and compliance, among others
- Acting respectfully and fairly with all team members and stakeholders, embracing differences so that everyone feels cared for and included
- Demonstrating a high-level of self-awareness
- Ability to identify strategies/learning approaches to continually build their capability, including ability to be coached
About You
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working collaboratively and building sustaining relationships
- Project management skills and experience in coordinating community programs
- Ability to work collaboratively with technical staff to achieve outcomes through the sharing of expertise and technical capabilities
- Sound communication skills including the ability to write recommendations, memos, reports, presentations, and letters, as well as present information to a range of stakeholders
- Proven ability in developing, managing, and tracking data utilizing Excel spreadsheets and other reporting software, including stakeholder management systems
- Minimum of five years demonstrated experience
- Ability to travel to nearby communities, attend trade shows and events, work outside of normal hours, as necessary, and spend time away from home. (~40% of the time)
- Post-secondary education in Community Relations, Communications, Public Affairs, Human Resources, Sales, or related fields will be considered an asset
- Excellent time management and prioritization skills
- Financial administration experience in submitting purchasing requisitions, purchase orders, payment requests and reconciliation of expense reports
- Strong skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with SAP is an asset
- Valid Canadian driver’s license
