About the Role
As a Specialist Data Modelling Engineer, you will contribute to Digital initiatives that improve safety, productivity, operational performance, and business decision-making at BHP by designing and maintaining business-aligned data models, data quality processes, and governance artefacts that enable trusted, secure, and business-ready data for analytics, reporting, operational use, and emerging AI-enabled use cases.
Role Purpose & Pivotal Experiences
- The Specialist Data Modeller supports the delivery of trusted, well-structured, and business-ready data for analytics, reporting, operational processes, and digital products.
- The role works closely with Data Domain Owners, business stakeholders, Data Engineers, and platform teams to define, design, and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models, ensuring data is understandable, discoverable, and fit for purpose.
- The Specialist Data Modeller applies deep knowledge of data modelling, governance, and metadata management to improve data quality, consistency, lineage, and semantic clarity across analytical platforms.
- The role plays a key part in enabling AI-ready and analytics-ready data by ensuring datasets are properly modelled, documented, and aligned to business concepts, supporting advanced analytics and emerging AI-enabled capabilities.
About You
Data Modelling & Governance:
- Strong understanding of conceptual, logical, and physical data modelling techniques
- Experience modelling structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data
- Hands-on experience maintaining dimensional, relational, and analytical data models
- Strong understanding of data governance principles, including Data quality, Metadata management, Lineage and source-to-target mapping, and Classification and business semantics
- Experience supporting AI-ready data practices, including semantic relationships and curated datasets
Tools & Artefacts:
- Experience using data modelling and visualisation tools such as Lucidchart, PowerDesigner, erwin or similar tools
- Experience contributing to or maintaining Metadata repositories, Data dictionaries, Business glossaries and Lineage documentation
Data Platforms & SQL:
- Strong understanding of relational databases
- Exposure to MPP, distributed, or NoSQL platforms
- Solid SQL skills to validate models, understand transformations, and support analytics teams
