About the Role

 

Working closely with the Head of Legal / Manager Legal the Specialist will fill a vacancy in the team managing regulatory aspects of BHP’s payroll review.. The successful candidate will contribute to the success of BHP by providing specialist, strategic legal advice to enable the business to achieve its commercial objectives in compliance with applicable laws and consistent with the BHP Charter.

 

The Specialist will be responsible for providing high quality, timely and cost-effective legal representation, in conjunction with external legal services providers, to inform key company decision-making processes and proactively managing legal risk and exposure associated with regulatory engagement.

 

This role is expected to deliver independent, strategic advice across all the subject areas covered by the team, balancing commercial, reputational and legal risks and opportunities. Occasional travel domestically within Australia (subject to relevant business requirements and approvals) is expected.

 

  • Provide subject matter expertise and strategic input to manage regulatory engagement and inform relevant internal stakeholders.
  • Deliver independent, strategic advice across a range of subject areas, balancing commercial, reputational and legal risks and opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key internal stakeholders, including Corporate Communications, Finance Projects, HR Governance, Group Tax and Group Governance.

About You

 

  • Law Degree
  • Admitted to practice in Australia, with current practising certificate
  • Experience in regulatory engagements and complex commercial disputes (litigation / arbitration). International and/or investigations experience is desirable.
  • Experience in the resources industry and/or employment law is advantageous.
  • Deep technical understanding of Australian law and legal process (foreign legal experience and qualification is advantageous)
  • Experience in the resources industry and/or employment law is advantageous.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English (Spanish or Portuguese is advantageous), including the ability to succinctly communicate legal strategy, risks and opportunities.
  • Strong understanding of emerging issues and disputes-related risks and opportunities.
  • Ability to lead aspects of very large legal projects involving cross-functional teams.
  • Outstanding judgement in evaluating financial and non-financial considerations.
  • Ability to effectively and constructively influence internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Commercial and strategic acumen.
