BHP WA Iron Ore is one of the world’s leading suppliers of iron ore. The Company’s operations currently involve an integrated system of seven inland mines, more than 1,000 kilometres of rail and two separate port facilities, Nelson Point and Finucane Island at Port Hedland. 

About the Role

 

Reporting to the Manager Finance Business Partnership, the Finance Specialist enables value generation, through analysis of data, development of robust financial plans and active coaching of stakeholders on financial data and performance. You will bring your expertise in Finance to provide critical reviews of financial inputs and engaging with stakeholders to clarify and validate requests. Through this work, you will recommend improvements to existing processes, practices and systems.

 

 

Key accountabilities of this role include:

 

 

This role, working with the Finance Specialist and Manager roles in Port Hedland, will partner with respective business stakeholders to apply an understanding of business context and end-to-end value chain to deliver value maximising opportunities, including: 

 

 

  • Engaging in regular conversations and coaching with Operations teams, asking probing questions to deeply understand stakeholder needs, goals and challenges.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to review and process inputs to Budget and Forecast, focusing on driving performance against benchmarks. 
  • Conduct analysis of the outputs of planning processes against targets and aid in identifying improvement opportunities leading to effective cost management and achievement of unit cost guidelines.
  • Performing month end analysis and commentary covering price, volume and efficiency variances; and providing insights to communicate with Operations teams
  • Supporting Finance in improvement of the effectiveness of the function through integrated fit-for-purpose data analytics processes.
  • Supporting both Finance and Operations teams in delivering improvement to businesses operation and financial performance.
  • Confidently presenting ideas, results and recommendations to internal stakeholders.
  • Keeping up to date with data analytics trends and working with the broader Finance team to ensure an optimal approach in delivering business requests that drive process efficiency and standardisation.
  • From time to time, you may be required to support ad-hoc requests/queries and assist with resolution of complex requests and escalations.

 

About You

 

You are naturally curious and analytical, always eager to explore new ideas and solve problems creatively. With strong communication skills, you connect effectively with stakeholders and thrive in collaborative environments. You excel at distilling complex information and working with technical experts to translate challenges into actionable business solutions.

 

Your expertise includes a solid grasp of finance master data structures (cost centres, profit centres, hierarchies, WBS) and the ability to interpret and review financial data to drive business outcomes. You think commercially, champion process improvements, and bring hands-on experience in budgeting, forecasting, month-end analysis, and project management.

 

The ideal candidate will also possess the following:

 

  • Advanced MS Excel skills for managing large data sets; experience with Analysis for Office is highly valuable
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) and stakeholder influencing skills, including demonstrated ability to use MS PowerPoint / Power BI to efficiently and effectively distil key information, communicate complex ideas and drive change.
  • Proficiency in SAP or similar ERP systems and skilled in using data visualisation tools (e.g., Power BI).
  • Graduate degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or Commerce. Chartered Accountant, CPA, Master’s, MBA, or currently studying towards these qualifications is a definite plus!
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience, ideally in a resources-based environment.

 

Location

 

 

With this role, you will fly-in and fly-out from Perth to Port Hedland and stay at the Port Haven Village on a standard 12 hour working day.  You will be working primarily at the Nelson Point site but supporting stakeholders across multiple office and worksite locations around the Hedland area. The role includes occasional days working in the Perth office in City Square with other WAIO Finance team members, including regular team day activities. 
 

We currently have two positions available in our team, with the option for either permanent or fixed-term employment. We’re happy to discuss what works best for you based on your experience and preferences.
