About the Role

BHP is a leading global resources company. Our Minerals Australia Business includes operations in Queensland, Western Australia, New South Wales and South Australia, focusing on coal, iron ore, copper and nickel.

 

The Legal function is responsible for providing strategic legal advice to enable BHP to achieve its commercial objectives and manage legal risk in compliance with applicable laws and consistent with the BHP Charter.

 

We now have an excellent opportunity for a lawyer to join BHP’s Legal team as a Legal Counsel – Employee Relations. Reporting to the Head of Legal – Employee Relations. This is a unique opportunity to utilise your skills and experience with a leading global resources company. This role will provide legal advice and support to the BHP Group and particularly the Minerals Australia Business on employee relations legal matters including strategy, bargaining, industrial dispute, unfair dismissals, termination and redundancy. The role is based in Perth, with occasional travel as required.

 

Key accountabilities include:

  • Conform with the BHP Charter, Code of Conduct, Our Requirements and relevant statutory obligations; and
  • Have an overriding commitment to health, safety and environment responsibility and to sustainable development.

 

Your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Acting as a key adviser and providing independent specific and targeted legal advice on employee relations legal matters to the Minerals Australia Business;
  • Acting as key advisor on employment issues supporting our Functions across Australia, Asia, the United Kingdom and Europe, including advising on BHP policies, the management of sexual assault and harassment, bullying and harassment and workplace conduct issues, advising on restructures and redundancy; and
  • Working collaboratively with Legal and other functions to ensure BHP is appropriately managing employee relations legal and other external risks.

About You

Previous experience in employee relations legal matters, including providing strategic legal advice on enterprise bargaining and the operation of industrial instruments, and providing practical employment advise to various stakeholders is essential.

 

You will bring to this role a range of capabilities including strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to work well in a team environment. You will have strong commercial acumen and be an excellent communicator (both oral and written) with the ability to resolve complex problems, present well-articulated legal arguments and influence stakeholders at all levels.

 

To be considered for this role a Law degree and the ability to practice in Australia is essential. Post admission experience of at least 4-6 years is desirable.
