About the Role

 
As Specialist Legal Senior, reporting to the Head of Legal Reparation, you will play a critical role in supporting the implementation of the New Rio Doce Agreement and the ongoing reparation efforts related to the Samarco Fundão dam failure in Mariana, Minas Gerais.
Based in Brazil, you will provide legal support across a broad range of complex matters, including strategic legal issues, litigation, and stakeholder negotiations within a highly regulated and dynamic environment. Your expertise will help shape legal strategy, manage legal and regulatory risks, and support key business decisions that contribute to long-term sustainable outcomes.
This role offers the opportunity to work closely with diverse internal and external stakeholders, including government authorities, regulators, public prosecutors, public defenders, municipalities, and affected communities. Through your work, you will contribute to delivering meaningful outcomes while helping navigate complex legal and reputational considerations.
This is a hybrid position that requires periodic travel, particularly within Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.
 

Main Responsibilities

 

  • Support the Legal Reparation team in managing and advising on complex litigation and strategic legal matters associated with the implementation of the New Rio Doce Agreement.
  • Provide legal advice across judicial, administrative, and regulatory proceedings involving multiple jurisdictions and areas of law, including civil liability and environmental law.
  • Participate in and support negotiations with a broad range of stakeholders, including government authorities, regulators, public prosecutors, public defenders, municipalities, and affected communities.
  • Identify legal risks and opportunities proactively and provide practical, solutions-focused legal advice.
  • Exercise sound judgment and operate independently while managing complex legal, regulatory, and reputational risks.
  • Collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams and provide support to other Legal Team members when required.

 

About You

 

What We Expect From You:

  • A Law degree and admission to practice law in Brazil.
  • Significant experience managing complex litigation matters.
  • Proven experience advising on civil liability, environmental, regulatory, or public law matters.
  • Experience gained in leading law firms and/or major national or multinational organizations.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a hybrid working environment from Belo Horizonte offices.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel as required.
  • Candidates based in Belo Horizonte, or willing to relocate, will be highly regarded.
  • Business fluency in both English and Portuguese.
  • Spanish language skills are desirable but not mandatory.
