About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Maritime Commercial (Outbound Container and Breakbulk Freight) to join the Maritime team in Singapore, reporting to the Head of Maritime Enterprise, as part of BHP’s broader Commercial organisation.
BHP transports bulk, breakbulk and containerised cargo across our global supply chain, delivering goods into our operations and exporting our commodities out to our customers worldwide. The success of our business relies on a safe supply chain that delivers commercially and operationally superior performance.
This role is based in Singapore and is responsible for supporting the commercial and operational supply chain to deliver optimised maritime solutions for BHP’s supply chain.
The successful candidate will be commercially astute, with supply chain expertise from within the container freight and/or logistics industry. They will:
- Be a self-starter and able to operate effectively in high-pressure environments and ambiguity.
- Demonstrate a passion for sustainability and carbon abatement supply chain solutions, with an appetite for technology and data-driven process improvement.

- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of, and adherence to, relevant policies to meet BHP and external legislative, reporting, governance and compliance requirements.
Key Accountabilities
Safety & Sustainability
- Demonstrates and instils an overriding commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility and sustainable development, specifically related to the maritime industry.
- Awareness of container shipping requirements for dangerous goods.
- Awareness of vessel vetting requirements through global organisations such as RightShip.
Commercial acumen
- Exposure across a logistics chain and/or container freight network within a shipping line, freight forwarder or logistics position (commercial or operational).
- Engagement and management of key stakeholders (including internal customers and cargo suppliers) ensuring exceptional service delivery and commercial value.
- Supports account management of key container freight providers, ensuring superior safety, operational and commercial outcomes.
- Supports maritime commercial supply chain strategy development, reporting and budget management.
- Supports optimisation of the Maritime P&L using technology and software solutions to deliver value for BHP.
- Translates market information, indices and insights into value-generating strategic freight positions to optimise supply chain outcomes.
- Is strategically aware of industry regulatory events and their impacts.
- Understands freight industry supply chain dynamics and identifies optimisation levers to improve safety, sustainability, efficiency and effectiveness.
- Partners with BHP’s regional offices, Assets and Maritime teams, as well as shipping lines and breakbulk providers, to deliver optimal and cost-effective supply chain solutions.
- Interfaces with maritime operations teams to ensure smooth supply chain execution and positive commercial outcomes.
- Demonstrates strong external strategic relationship management and sound project management capability.
Risk management
- Demonstrates understanding of inherent industry and supply chain risks (safety, operational and commercial) with awareness of relevant risk management tools and processes.
About You
- Bachelor degree in Economics, Engineering, Shipping, Supply Chain or Business.
Experience & Technical Competencies
- 5+ years working experience in commodity markets, shipping or supply chain logistics industries.
- Industry experience in logistics, 3PL or shipping line roles.
- Knowledge of freight markets and operations.
- Languages – Fluent in English.
