About the Role
The New Markets Technical Specialist is a key member of the China Hub, supporting BHP's New Markets Delivery Office by providing technical expertise to identify, assess and develop suppliers across China.
The role works closely with Procurement, Assets, Projects and suppliers to evaluate technical capability, validate solutions against operational requirements, identify technical and lifecycle risks, and support the adoption of new suppliers and supply chains. The role combines engineering judgement, market knowledge and supplier engagement to ensure commercially attractive opportunities are also technically fit for purpose and aligned with BHP standards.
Key accountabilities:
- Assess supplier technical capability against BHP operational, project and engineering requirements.
- Evaluate supplier products, equipment, manufacturing processes and quality systems to determine suitability for BHP applications.
- Support technical due diligence activities, supplier evaluations and onboarding processes.
- Ensure proposed solutions are fit-for-purpose, specification-compliant and capable of meeting operational performance requirements.
- Identify technical, quality, reliability and lifecycle risks early and provide recommendations to support sourcing and supplier selection decisions.
- Support the development of market intelligence through technical assessments of suppliers, products, technologies and manufacturing capabilities.
- Conduct supplier visits, technical reviews and factory assessments to validate capability and identify improvement opportunities.
- Support tender evaluations by providing technical analysis and recommendations to Procurement and stakeholder teams.
- Apply understanding of mining operations, equipment and maintenance requirements to ensure commercial decisions consider operational impacts and whole-of-life performance.
- Support the embedding of BHP standards, technical governance requirements and engineering expectations with suppliers.
- Build effective working relationships with Procurement, Operations, Projects and supplier stakeholders to support New Markets initiatives.
- Escalate technical, quality and supplier risks in a timely manner and support development of mitigation strategies.
- Act as an ambassador for BHP while fostering strong supplier relationships and driving continuous improvement.
About You
- Experience in the mining, heavy industry, engineering, manufacturing or related sectors.
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical, Electrical, Structural or related discipline.
- Practical understanding of mining equipment, fixed plant, projects, fabrication, manufacturing or maintenance environments.
- Demonstrated ability to assess supplier capability, technical solutions and operational risks.
- Strong engineering and problem-solving skills with the ability to balance technical requirements and commercial outcomes.
- Ability to identify practical risks that may not be evident through specification reviews alone.
- Experience working with suppliers, contractors or manufacturing organisations.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills with demonstrated ability to influence Manager and Superintendent-level stakeholders.
- Ability to gather, analyse and communicate technical information clearly and effectively.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and focus on high-value activities.
- Sound judgement and ability to identify risks, escalate issues and support decision-making.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills across multicultural environments.
- Fluent in Mandarin and English.
