About the Role

 

As a Safety Specialist supporting BHP, you will play a key role in delivering exceptional safety outcomes across a dynamic, high-performing mining operation. In this role, you will collaborate closely with line leadership, offering expert coaching, strategic influence, and technical guidance on safety risk management, field leadership, and event investigation quality. You will be instrumental in driving continuous improvement in safety performance while fostering strong, trust-based relationships with both operational and functional teams.

 

You will also:

 

  • Provide proactive support to line leaders in fulfilling their Health & Safety responsibilities, including risk assessments, field leadership, and compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Demonstrate strong proficiency in material risk management and verification processes to effectively engage in field-based discussions with customers.
  • Facilitate or coach event investigations, offering constructive feedback to drive learning and improvement.
  • Ensure accurate, transparent, and timely reporting of Health & Safety data.
  • Assist in the implementation of Safety improvement initiatives aligned with the Integrated Operations Plan (IOP).
  • Monitor and enhance the quality of risk assessments, event investigations, and field leadership activities, fostering a culture of continuous learning and safety excellence.
  • Deliver targeted safety training programs to operational teams, including task-based risk management, non-significant event investigation facilitation, and high-quality field leadership practices.
  • Champion continuous improvement in safety performance by actively engaging with site leaders, promoting effective field verifications, and modelling high standards.
  • Exhibit a strong commitment to building a positive team culture and influencing others through collaboration and leadership.
  • Demonstrate a proactive mindset with a continuous drive for innovation and improvement.
  • Possess a minimum of five years’ experience in the mining and/or heavy industry sectors.

While formal qualifications in Health & Safety, Risk Management, or a related field are valued, it’s your mindset, integrity, and genuine commitment to safety that will truly set you apart.

 

You will also have:

 

  • Demonstrated passion for safety and a strong commitment to fostering a culture of care.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels on safety matters.
  • Proven coaching and mentoring capabilities, driven by a genuine desire to support others, deliver meaningful outcomes, and promote continuous improvement.
  • Proficient in, or quick to learn, Health & Safety management tools such as Microsoft Excel, Event Management Systems (EMS), and SAP.
  • Strong attention to detail, supporting accountability and high safety standards across operational and functional teams.
  • Possession of a valid C Class Western Australian (or equivalent) driver’s license

 

Location

 

You will be part of the Eastern Mine Hub, which includes both Newman and Jimblebar Operations, working on a fly-in fly-out (FIFO) roster of 5:2 / 4:3 and or 5:2 / 4:3 / 9:5 from Perth. This role is available on a full-time basis, with the option for part-time job share. Flexible work arrangements will be considered to support individual needs. Multiple opportunities are currently available across both operations.
