About the role
The Studies Manager role provides leadership to a team or teams focussed on project leadership and the safe and efficient delivery of projects through their lifecycle in line with BHP standards and requirements, within budget, scope and schedule to optimise value for BHP. Translates strategy into operational plans for the department.
Key responsibilities
- Conducts benchmarking, implements prioritisation methodologies and identifies key investment drivers to effectively manage key requirements across the portfolio.
- Identifies opportunities to optimise value, manages associated risks and applies Optimised With/Optimised Without framework principles to create and preserve maximum value from projects across BHP.
- Identifies and assesses risks, makes risk informed decisions, uses BHP's risk management framework and builds a risk aware culture to support safe and productive performance outcomes.
- Makes evidence based and strategic decisions in alignment with longer term business objectives.
- Defines value drivers and determines the boundaries of an opportunity to determine if it is worth further investment.
- Facilitates activities and inputs with stakeholders to ensure high quality change management, making sure that key assumptions are competitive and realistic.
- Executes the selection and definition phases study by:
- Managing the development and comparison of options to determine the preferred investment alternative, considering value creation investments and assessing material risks and issues.
- Managing the progress of project disciplines and requirements to an appropriate level, including license to operate (regulatory approvals and permitting, community consultation).
- Finalising the strategy and preparing the plan for project execution at a level of detail appropriate to the size and complexity of the project, incorporating the input from relevant functions and stakeholders, particularly delivery.
- Provides input to 5YR Plan objectives and budget, driving performance and implementation accordingly.
- Collaborates with the management of functional resources to ensure the provisional of appropriately skilled resources to establish an effective cross functional team that will achieve the project area’s integrated scope, cost and schedule requirements.
- Establishes and drives a regular reporting process to allow any risks or deviations from the plan to be identified, communicated and rectified within a timely manner in order to reduce impact and delays to the project and provides guidance to the Head of on projects studies risk management and relevant mitigating actions.
- Ensures creation of an environment in which internal lessons learned and external best practices are part of the operational processes and manages the measurement and continuous improvement of performance, recommending any changes required to identify capital efficiency initiatives and productivity improvements.
About you
- Tertiary qualifications in Engineering, Project Management, or related disciplines.
- Postgraduate studies in Business/Finance or Project Management.
- Experience in Non-Conventional Tailings project management, from study to execution, and hand over to operations. (Required. Please, inclued detailed experience in your CV).
- Experience in management of a portfolio of projects.
- Effective and highly influential diverse stakeholder engagement including an ability to constructively challenge ideas and build trusted relationships.
- Capability in building and developing diverse, high performance teams.
- Exceptional communication and the ability to engage across a multitude of levels.
- A sound understanding of key business and mining industry performance driver.
- Strategic and analytical thinker that demonstrates business acumen, with the ability to focus and prioritise critical deliverables to provide timely insights to stakeholders.
- Business acumen and understanding of business value drivers and value optimisation processes applying divergent and convergent thinking skills.
- Fluent in spoken and written English and Spanish. (Required)
