About the Role
Reporting to the Manager Environment Sustainability, the Environment Superintendent Centrals is a key leadership role responsible for partnering with operations to deliver strong environmental performance across the Central Mining Hub, including Yandi, South Flank, and Mining Area C.
As a senior operational leader, you will work closely with operational leaders, project teams and General Managers to provide environmental leadership and oversight across a diverse and dynamic operating landscape. You will play a key role in ensuring environmental commitments are met, material environmental risks are effectively managed, and compliance obligations are achieved, while supporting the successful delivery of major operational initiatives.
This role will also support the delivery of significant growth projects and new environmental approvals across the complex Central Mining Hub. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced environmental professional to develop team capability, influence operational outcomes, and contribute to the safe and sustainable performance of the business.
Role responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Provide visible environmental leadership to operational teams through collaboration, coaching, and practical technical advice.
- Lead, develop, and coach a team of environmental professionals, ensuring priorities are aligned to operational needs and value is delivered to the business.
- Lead the identification, management and governance of material environmental risks, with a particular focus on biodiversity, ecological values, and environmental impact mitigation across the Central Mining Hub.
- Provide oversight of environmental performance relating to Matters of National Environmental Significance (MNES), ecological receptors, vegetation health, surface water systems, and approved environmental outcomes.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Champion continuous improvement of environmental standards, systems, and processes across WAIO.
- Contribute as a member of the WAIO Environment leadership team, fostering a connected, high-performing culture focused on protecting what matters most.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- Demonstrated experience leading and developing teams in a mining environment.
- Strong technical capability and a proven ability to identify, manage, and resolve environmental issues.
- Demonstrated experience leading the management of material environmental risks, including biodiversity, ecological values and environmental approvals within a complex operational setting.
- A collaborative leadership style with a motivation for developing people and building high-performing teams.
- Excellent organisational skills, operating discipline, and the ability to prioritise work in a dynamic environment.
- Outstanding stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and partner effectively across all levels of the business.
- Knowledge of Environmental Management Systems, including ISO 14001.
- Strong understanding of environmental legislation and compliance requirements relevant to the Western Australian mining sector.
- A track record of driving continuous improvement and delivering practical business outcomes.
- A tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- Experience with the BHP Operating System (BOS) will be highly regarded.
