About Potash

The Jansen project in Saskatchewan, Canada is set to become one of the largest potash mines in the world and is located approximately 140 kilometers east of Saskatoon.  BHP’s CAD$14 billion (US$10.5 billion) investment in the Jansen project will deliver a potash mine in Saskatchewan designed to maximize sustainability. As the largest investment in Saskatchewan’s history, Jansen is expected to generate approximately 5,500 workforce opportunities during construction and 900 long-term roles. 

 

Jansen's construction will take place over several years with first production planned for late 2026. Once fully ramped up, Jansen is expected to have an initial production capacity of approximately 8.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), with the potential to produce 16 to 17 Mtpa in future stages. Purpose

The Superintendent HSS Systems will play a pivotal role in driving our integrated management system and HSS reporting and analysis capabilities. The role provides leadership to a team focused on the strategic management of health, hygiene, security, safety, emergency and HSS assurance related systems, processes, and reporting across Potash Canada. Coaches and develops a team to deliver high performance. It specifically oversees the management of the Jansen Project HSS systems, including technology applications, and the development and deployment of the Potash Integrated Management System (IMS) that incorporates the requirements that support;

  • a Safety Management System (in alignment with ISO45001)
  • an Environment Management System (ISO14001)
  • a Quality Management System (ISO9001)
  • alignment to various Sustainability Standards (ICMM, Towards Sustainable Mining)

About the Role

This role will ensure that all aspects of the Potash Asset and Jansen Project are delivered within scope, by:

  • Establishing and maintaining working relationships with key people across project, operation and multi-functional teams, creating a network of influence that contributes to business goals.
  • Applying an understanding of specific HSS systems, management, activities, risks, and processes (e.g. Health, Hygiene, Environment, Security, Safety, Emergency Response, Reporting and Assurance). 
  • Ensuring principles of simplification are applied, whilst driving and implementing changes to performance requirements, process and tools, aligned to strategic objectives.
  • Implementing governance/assurance and Management of change practices to control value outcomes across Potash.
  • Identifying and analyzing complex problems and recommendations, cutting through complexity and ambiguity to help others understand key issues.
  • Directing and influencing team members by providing clear vision, context and objectives to deliver improvement outcomes.
  • Managing routines that monitor and measure HSS performance using appropriate systems, tools and techniques.
  • Understanding and regularly discussing the role of risk management, coaching and providing guidance to key stakeholders to establish, review, critically analyze and effectively control and mitigate risk.

About You

  • Proven experience leading teams, managing change and delivering results.
  • Solid technical background in developing, implementing and understanding management systems (Safety, Health, Environment), especially within the industrial sector (construction, energy, mining, manufacturing, consulting, etc.).
  • Experience in strategic planning, including budgeting, strategic thinking, etc.
  • Preferably a post-secondary education in Health, Safety, Environment, Project Management or Risk Management.
  • Background in Reporting and Analysis or Project Management.
  • Inclusive leadership style with excellent customer-facing and communication skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal English language communication skills.
  • Solid organizational skills including attention to detail and multi-tasking.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of various Canadian Legislations.

Work Location & Schedule

Downtown, Saskatoon office with visits to the Jansen mine site. 40 hours per week. Hybrid working (flexible, shared workstations and a combination of office and work from home) is standard for BHP.
