About the Role

As the Superintendent Water Planning, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering WAIO’s water management outcomes across the full asset lifecycle. You will translate strategic water stewardship requirements into practical, risk-aware and operationally effective plans that enable safe, sustainable and value-maximising mining.

You will lead a team of hydrogeologists and water engineers to develop integrated water management plans covering knowledge acquisition, dewatering, surplus water management, water infrastructure planning, and daily operational performance. Success in this role relies on exceptional communication and leadership; ensuring water considerations are embedded in mine planning, operations and stakeholder decision-making.

This role will be based in Perth, however site travel will be required monthly or as required.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and developing a high‑performing technical team.
  • Designing and overseeing hydrogeological investigations.
  • Developing strategic and tactical mine water management plans across planning horizons.
  • Preparing and integrating water infrastructure requirements, including surface water systems, production and surplus water borefields.
  • Driving robust operational water performance, monitoring and compliance.
  • Liaising with Mine Planning, Production, Environment, Projects and other functions to embed water into business decisions.
  • Engaging regulators, communities and external operators on complex regional water challenges.
  • Upholding BHP’s water stewardship commitments and ensuring alignment with Global and WAIO Water Standards.

About You

You are a collaborative and influential leader who excels at simplifying complex technical information and bringing people on the journey. While a hydrogeology background is highly desirable, we welcome applicants with deep experience in complex technical domains, strong analytical capability and a proven track record of shaping outcomes through influence.

You bring:

  • Outstanding communication skills, able to build trust, influence decisions and inspire action.
  • Experience in mine water management, hydrogeology, hydrology, or similarly complex technical fields.
  • Demonstrated capability in technical leadership, coaching and team development.
  • Ability to integrate diverse datasets, identify risks and develop practical solutions.
  • Experience navigating regulatory environments and engaging constructively with external stakeholders.
  • A passion for responsible water stewardship and making water a value‑creating enabler for the business.
