The challenge ahead
Key responsabilities
- Lead, improve, and provide expertise in safety risk management practices to strengthen organizational safety outcomes and performance.
- Source information, plan, and conduct analysis to support evidence-based decision-making.
- Build organizational capability through coaching, mentoring, and development of leaders and teams in risk management, critical controls, and safety leadership.
- Leverage leading and lagging indicators, assurance findings, and operational data to identify emerging risks, prioritize actions, and support informed decision-making.
- Strengthen operational ownership of safety by coaching and influencing leaders to effectively manage risks and improve operational discipline.
- Drive continuous improvement through process simplification, improved system effectiveness, and the embedding of sustainable safety performance.
- Identify and assess risks, make risk-informed decisions, apply BHP’s risk management framework, and promote a risk-aware culture that supports safe and productive outcomes.
- Provide independent assurance on the effectiveness of critical controls, safety systems, and risk management processes while driving timely improvement actions.
- Influence and engage internal and external stakeholders to strengthen risk-informed decision-making and achieve sustainable safety outcomes.
- Determine root causes of complex problems and evaluate multiple solutions through a structured and disciplined approach.
- Maintain a strong focus on customer needs, safety excellence, value creation, and collaboration across the organization.
What we expect from you
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Risk Prevention Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Execution Engineering, or a related engineering discipline with relevant experience in Safety, Occupational Health, and Risk Management.
- Postgraduate studies in Safety, Risk Management, Leadership, or Business Administration are desirable.
- SERNAGEOMIN A/B certification and/or SNS Professional Expert accreditation are desirable.
Experience
- 10+ years of experience in mining or other high-risk industries.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary HSS or operational teams.
- Proven experience in operational risk management, critical controls, incident investigations, and safety management systems (ISO 45001 and ISO 14001).
- Experience developing safety culture, contractor management, and stakeholder engagement within complex operational environments.
- Intermediate to advanced English is desirable.
Technical Knowledge
- Operational Risk Management and Critical Control Management.Incident investigation methodologies (ICAM, TapRooT, or equivalent).
- BowTie and risk assessment methodologies.Human Factors, Occupational Health, and Emergency Management.
- Knowledge of Chilean mining regulations and applicable HSE legislation.
- Strong leadership, coaching, stakeholder management, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
