About the Role

As an experienced and strategic mining professional, you will join our Copper SA team as Superintendent Strategic Mine Planning, a critical leadership role that will influence the future direction of BHP’s Copper SA growth opportunities.

 

Reporting to the Manager Strategic Planning and Studies, you will lead a team of highly skilled professionals responsible for delivering strategic mine planning outcomes, growth studies, life-of-asset planning, and ore reserve reporting.

 

As Superintendent Strategic Mine Planning, you will provide technical leadership, commercial insight, and strategic direction to support key business decisions. Working closely with operations, geoscience, project teams, finance, business planning, and the BHP Resource Centre of Excellence, you will develop and evaluate pathways that maximise value and support future growth.

 

You will play a central role in major studies and investment decisions while helping drive innovation, continuous improvement, and industry-leading mine planning practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic mine planning activities for Copper SA assets (Carrapateena and Prominent Hill)
  • Develop growth options and evaluate trade-offs to maximise long-term asset value.
  • Drive life-of-asset planning, optimisation studies, and expansion opportunities.
  • Support annual Ore Reserve estimation and declaration processes.
  • Develop mine designs and schedules across multiple underground mining methods.
  • Promote enterprise optimisation and support capital allocation planning.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives within mine planning processes.
  • Provide technical leadership for major studies, projects, and investment evaluations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align technical, operational, and commercial objectives.
  • Monitor industry trends and emerging technologies to improve safety, productivity, and value creation.
  • Represent Copper SA externally as a leader in mine planning excellence.
  • Manage study work packages and external stakeholders where required.

 

About You

 

You are a strategic thinker with deep underground mining expertise and a track record of influencing complex business decisions. You bring strong technical capability combined with commercial acumen and the ability to lead and inspire high-performing teams.

 

Your Experience Includes:

  • Degree qualification in Mining Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience in mine planning and mining operations.
  • Extensive underground hard rock mining experience across multiple mining methods.
  • Previous experience as a Competent Person for Ore Reserve reporting.
  • Strong understanding of mine planning, optimisation, and strategic studies.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical concepts and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Commercial understanding and experience evaluating business value drivers.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams or major project studies.
  • Interest and capability in economic modelling and business analysis.
  • Study management experience or exposure.
  • Deswik proficiency

This role is based in Adelaide, South Australia, with significant interface across Copper SA assets.
