About the Role
Aligned with the Geoscience mission of “delivering deposit knowledge to realise our full potential”, the Hydro Supervisor Geoscience will lead the safe, cost-effective, and technically sound execution of field activities. This includes managing all aspects of wide diameter drilling programs using high-pressure air systems, ensuring that drill plans, enabling activities, and contracts are delivered within strategic and tactical horizons.
This role is based at one of BHP’s Western Australian Iron Ore hubs in the Pilbara, either residential or FIFO on an 8:6 roster, reporting to the Geoscience Operations Superintendent.
In this role you will:
- Lead end-to-end project management of wide diameter drilling campaigns, hydro activities, geophysical surveys, and test pumping.
- Ensure pre-, during-, and post-project engagements are completed to plan, including stakeholder alignment, contractor readiness, and operational handovers.
- Apply disciplined project management to deliver transformative in-field technologies and initiatives, with a focus on high-pressure air drilling systems.
- Demonstrate deep understanding of drilling risks, including ground conditions, equipment limitations, and compressed air hazards.
- Embed Critical Control Verifications, risk assessments, field leadership, and quality investigations as standard operating practice.
- Maintain operational discipline through hazard identification, event reporting, and investigation close-out.
- Manage and interpret Hydro drilling contracts, ensuring scope clarity, performance tracking, and contractor compliance.
- Provide contractor leadership by:
- Ensuring contractor teams are inducted, competent, and aligned with site safety and operational standards.
- Monitoring contractor performance against KPIs (safety, productivity, cost, quality).
- Resolving contractor issues promptly and escalating where necessary to maintain project continuity.
- Represent the hub at Monthly contractor Meetings, providing feedback and insights on drilling performance and project execution.
- Compile and analyse project data (safety, culture, productivity) for interim and end-of-project reviews, identifying lessons learned and improvement opportunities.
About You
- Proven experience in wide diameter drilling and high-pressure air operations, with strong technical and safety leadership.
- Skilled in managing challenging drilling conditions, including fractured ground, water ingress, and equipment reliability.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams, remove silos, and foster collaboration across Geoscience, Operations, and Contractors.
- Strong capability in contractor management, including onboarding, supervision, performance tracking, and issue resolution.
- Proficient in relevant software platforms (e.g., ArcGIS, DDMS, Data Management Portal, 1SAP/Fiori).
- Strong project management capability, with a track record of delivering projects safely, on time, and within budget.
- Deep understanding of Hydro Drilling Operations, including bore construction mine de watering and managing aquifer injection.
- Ability to track and report compliance to plan for both volume (pads drilled, metres completed, bores installed) and cost (budget vs forecast vs actual), with clear variance analysis and corrective actions.
